I'm jolted back into existence when rough hands grab my shoulder and violently shake the crap out of me. I groan and roll over onto my side, ignoring the urgent pleas for me to wake up.
Honey, I haven't gotten any sleep since- well, since I can remember.
Wait. I can roll over.
I open my eyes fast and wide, not caring about the bright white that stares back. I reach back with my fist and connect with what I believe is the attackers shoulder. Jumping up, I see Sao, standing there with his eyes wide too, cradling his right shoulder, presumably the one I hit.
I jump over the table, not as smoothly as I would have liked but still making it to the other side, and hug Sao hard.
" How's it going, Nikki?" He says before leaning down and giving me a friendly peck on the cheek.
" Not that bad. Not as bad as you would think." I smile, giving him a squeeze and looking up into his eyes. His orange eyes. Then I remember why I'm here in the first place. I look down into his chest and my happiness falls away, replaced with a mask of morose.
" Sorry about your arm, Sao." I push back and sit onto the bleach white table behind me. I cross my arms, the sterileness of this room making me sick.
Sao stands there, looking me up and down, seeming as if on the verge of tears. I look down, determined to not see my best friend, the strong one of us, cry.
" I'm sorry, Nikki," He chokes out, barely audible."You wouldn't be here if it wasn't for me. It was foolish of me to come to your house and put you in danger like I did. I-"
" Don't say that. It was my fault that I'm here and not at home. I dumbly followed you outside into the snow and didn't make it in time. Like I could do anything when I got there anyways. It was my fault that I'm here, Sao, not yours. Don't blame yourself." I look up then and see his form, turned away from me with his head in his hands. I step down and onto the floor, my oddly shoeless feet slapping the tiled floor as I pad up to him.
I wrap my arms around him and hug him tightly, sitting down next to him and staring at the other white table across the room. Sao looks down at me sadly and wipes his hands off on his black sweatpants. He grasps my hands and rubs my knuckles with his long, calloused fingers. Occupied with his gentle affection, I don't notice the door open. When I hear the baritone of Dedrick Sandstones voice ring around the room, I freeze.
Sao jumps to his feet and pulls me with him when he looks up and sees a squadron of soldiers enter with Dedrick. He jerks me to his side and clasps my hand in his. Dedrick clears his throat and the troopers rush forward with guns aimed at our foreheads. Sao thrusts his hand out as he ducks to the floor. All of the men tumble backwards, head over heels. I squint my eyes and brace for the barrage of bullets that is sure to come.
When they don't come, I open my eyes. The people are shooting, but none of the bullets are hitting us. Sao looks at me in astonishment and I think why.
"You have telekinesis and healing and force-field abilities? Wow, Sao."
"Um, Nikki, that's not me. I think it's you."
