A small girl that was probably ex-night watch shuffled into my room in the B&B with my food.
She was grubby, and I hoped beyond hope that she hadn't had anything to do with making the food.
"Here you go miss." She handed the plastic plate to me and reached for the door. She stopped.
"Here, Miss. There was mail for you in the post." She handed a small letter to me.
Maybe I should explain. Fittes was technically who I worked for now so, they paid for the B&B. If Kipps needed me, he would call. And that was probably what the letter was. Still, a small part of me believed it was Lockwood, writing and begging for me to come back. That he was sorry and the kiss did mean something.
It wasn't Lockwood.Suspected Limbless.
Meet me at Piccadilly Station in five hours.
Kipps. My first case with Kipps. My first time seeing him after he kissed me. I retched at the thought. Glad the waitress had gone before she could see that, I ripped my belt off the coat stand and began to prepare.
Five hours later, I was standing on the deserted platform at Piccadilly station, waiting for Kipps to arrive.
"Lucy!" A shout. I spun round.
"Lock- oh. Hi Kipps." When he stopped right in front of me, (I had to take a step back to keep my personal space intact.) he cleared his throat.
"Right, well. Let's get down to business. Kate, Vernon. You go down that tunnel," he pointed to the left. "And see if you feel any physic presence. Lucy and I will go this way." Godwin glared at me as she strode off with Vernon. Kipps cleared his throat again. I rolled my eyes.
"Want a Lemsip, Kipps? Or is your throat okay?" I said. I knew he was doing it because he was embarrassed. He shot me a strange look.
"No, no. I'll be fine. Thank you."
"You're welcome." I said. I wasn't going to make this easy for him. "You gonna tell me what's happening then?" I strode off to the right. Kipps trotted after me.
"Uh, yes. Limbless. Supposedly. Seen on CCTV by a child apprentice. Oh, Lucy-" I cut him off.
"Is that torchlight?" There was a flash in the tunnel.
"Yes, I called in two other people." He ran after me and caught my arm. I spun around.
"Who?" I asked pointedly.
"Lucy?" My heart leaped. I turned slowly round, throwing away Kipps arm as if it were poisonous.
"Lockwood."
