I froze. And not just out of fear. The ghost-lock of a powerful Type Two had already gripped me.
On one side, Lockwood was screaming at me and on the other, George was lobbing a precautionary silver decoration at the Visitor I couldn't yet see. I looked slightly away from the space where the decoration landed and saw an outline.
An outline I didn't like.
My father sat on a plastic chair, his leather belt resting in his left hand. His beating stick.
He looked towards me and smiled.
You've been a bad girl. Time for your beating.
My eyes widened. My knees buckled.
Come on, where's my agent training?
I don't understand. Something's gone wrong. I'm terrified.
The Spectre that was my father stood up from the chair and paced slowly towards me, his belt cracking as he whipped it around his legs.
You've been a bad girl-
"Yes, I know!" I exploded. It was jut then that I realised Elizabeth had shouted it at the same time. She looked at me with wild eyes. Her terror knocked me back to my senses. I ran to her.
"I didn't know you were Physic! Listen, we have to get back to the house, my rapier's there!"
She stared at me and I shook her a little until she nodded.
"I- I have a key." I nodded and smiled.
"Great." I tried to sound as upbeat as possible. "Try to think positive, they feed off fear."
She nodded and laughed slightly. "It is Dad though, isn't it?" I looked back at the figure now fighting George.
"You okay?" I shouted.
"Go get the equipment!" He grunted. I smiled. He'll be okay.
I raced back to the cottage with Elizabeth. Luckily, the tent was only in the field opposite. I grabbed my rapier and a bottle of iron filings and sprinted out again.
On the way back, Emmy materialised beside me.
"I'll help!" She shouted.
"But Lockwood'll see you!" Elizabeth looked at me as if I was mad.
"Who are you talking to?" I ignored her.
"Can't she see you?" I asked Emmy. She scrunched her face up in concentration. Elizabeth's face went white with shock.
"A Visitor!"
"It's okay! I'm a good one." She grinned mischievously at my sister.
We reached the tent and I threw filings at the Visitor advancing on George. I threw the filings at Lockwood who ran to my side. Emmy was nowhere to be seen.
"We can do this Luce. Don't worry about what the Visitor looks like. It's not him." He gripped my arm rather too affectionately. I huffed.
"I wish it could have been him. It's going to give me pleasure to slice him in half."
Wow. Why the hell did I say that. Whenever I'm around him, I'm tongue-tied. Even when I'm fighting an apparition from the dead.
He looked at me, stunned.
"What?" I looked at him and smiled. "That's what he did to me. Well, not slicing me in half."
This is hilarious.
Emmy laughed inside my head.
Sorry, I'll shut up.
But it was too late. She had distracted me long enough for my father to lunge forward. Lockwood was blown away by a burst of freezing ghost-fog.
Ten metres.
Five.
Two....

Two.
It has stopped. My father juddered backwards and drifted away. The ghost disappeared. I heard Lockwood gasp from behind me. Emmy tried to hide her face but the damage had been done. He had seen her.
"You're dead." He choked. She glared at him.
"Good to see you too, bro."

Authors note~
