I woke up back in my comfy blue bed. I was on my back looking towards the sealing and I felt strangely calm and relaxed. I looked to the left side of my bed to see my white bucket hat sitting on the headboard of the bed. I reached over, put it on, and got out of bed to start the day.
"Now the day can officially begin." I said putting on my favorite hat.
As I walked downstairs. I could sense of dread in the back of my head. This was going to be a long day. Mom was in the kitchen cooking something, dad was working in the basement on both the wench and the lawnmower, and Joe was upstairs in his room playing with his toys.
"Good morning Jake." Mom called out from the kitchen upon hearing someone coming down the stairs.
"Good morning mom. What's that great smell?" I asked sniffing the air.
"It's French toast. Do you want some?" She asked back.
I replied with, "Sure, I would love some. Can you call me and dad up when its done?"
"Sure. Are you going to help your dad again?" she asked a little worried.
"Not today, I just want to talk to him." I said hoping she wouldn't ask what I wanted to talk to him about.
"What do you want to talk to him about?" She asked.
I'm telling you, it's like she can read my mind and know what I don't want to tell her. Sometimes she scares me.
"This is between me and dad." I answered.
"Ok, you have fun and stay away from the wench. You could get hurt around all those machines." She said going back to her French toast.
'If only you knew mom, if only you knew." I though while walking through the basement door.
aI walked downstairs to find dad replacing the chain on the wench. He was so busy, he didn't see me walk up next to him.
I then said, "How's it going?"
He jumped and said, "Don't sneak up behind people like that. You nearly gave me a heart attack. The wench here needs a new chain and a new belt; this belt is too worn down and it broke when the chain snapped yesterday."
"So you'll spend the next week trying to find the right size belt, right?" I asked smiling.
He glared at me and then returned to working on the wench.
Mom had told him that the wench needed a new belt last month. Mom and dad are both very good handymen and know lots about industrial equipment. But dad doesn't have time to keep the machinery around the house in tip top shape.
The wench we own is an older model that need special parts that are no longer made. The belt was the hardest piece to replace on it because it was of a new design that was scrapped after the sold four units. We just so happen to own one of those four. The belt used in this wench was a custom made belt for it that only the original company made; and they closed down last year. Day will either have a special belt made or search very hard for a new belt. I feel sorry for him.
"Hey Jake, we'll be going to your uncle Steffen's house later today." Dad said taking out the broken belt.
"It's been a long time since we've last seen him. How are we going to get there? We have school tomorrow." I asked.
"We'll be going there by plane." Dad said putting the belt onto his measuring table.
Dad has a table in the basement that has written increments engraved into it. He made it with his brother Steffen so he could measure things without a measuring tape or a ruler while downstairs. He uses it for measuring things that are under five feet long and three feet wide. This table is very useful.
