Bella swirled her vanilla milkshake. Summer idly tapped her feet on the floor, her strawberry drink gone. Charlie and Sunny were across the street playing with Cassie and Andy. Bella had the strange sense that the world was falling into place.
So of course, the world being the sneaky brat it was, had to crash it.
Ella Bryn Bellerose walked in. Summer's eyes widened. "Shit." She mumbled.
Ella wasn't alone, she was with Kara Gretson, the queen brat of the whole school.
"Oh hey!" Ella batted her eyes innocuously. "You guys are here!"
"OMG, like, Elle, I'm, like, so pysched for your like party tonight." Kara played with her dark hair.
Bella raised her eyebrows. "Like? Omg totally," she mocked. "Ttyl!"
Kara creased her eyebrows. Her green eyes shone as she thought about the insult in Bella's words.
Don't get Bella wrong. Kara was awful, but there was a time, two years ago to be exact, that their threesome had been a foursome. Back then Kara had thick glasses and a gajillion braces. Kara was smart and she wasn't ashamed of it. Now she used words old-Kara would have been horrified by.
"Well I'm sorry but-" Ella began.
"You know what?" Summer exploded. "I'm not gonna take anymore of your fake polite shit. You knew we were coming here because I sent you a text. So honestly, keep your crap. I'm done. You and your bullshit can go and sit in a corner and paint each other's fingernails pink. I don't give a damn." Summer stormed out of the restaurant.
"Bell-" Ella looked she was going to apologize.
"Summer's right. You purposefully came here with Kara to rub it in our face. That you were fine. Well I'm not fine. I lost my mom and, in a way, my dad too, in the span of a month! And yet all you can do is think about yourself! I have problems too, and I need to deal with them." Bella picked up their backpacks and stalked out of the diner.
Summer sat on the curb, staring at the park.
"Hey." Bella plopped down next to her.
"I didn't think you'd follow me." Summer refused to look Bella in the eye.
"I didn't think you'd do that." Bella looked at Charlie, who was swinging high.
"Me neither. It's just... I don't know." Summer fidgeted.
"Yeah." Bella's phone buzzed. "What?"
It was Eden, texting her.Hey, my parents are gone this weekend can I stay at your house?
"You gave her your number?" Summer asked.
"Nooo? Maybe I did and forgot?" Bella creased her eyebrows..
Summer shrugged. "Tell her yes."
Sure! Summer's gonna be there FYI. Bella's fingers flew across the screen.
Summer stood up and brushed the dirt from her tights. "I'll get Sunny and Charlie." She ran across the street.
K, see u soon! Eden replied.
Bella did a little twirl, right there in the middle of the sidewalk, she was happy.

"HELP!" Charlie screamed gleefully, racing around the countertop.
"I am coming, Charlie."Eden said robotically following him.
