" Happy Birthday, Dad," I smiled placing the large cake in front of him, " Today's your day so just sit back and enjoy." My sisters and I sang to my father, he blew out the candles. " You kids are too good to me," He looked me in the eye, " Especially you, Jeni."
" And you ABSOLUTLEY are." He smiled, giving me a slap on the back. I just grinned, cutting him a decent sized cake and laying it on his plate.
As my dad slowly ate his cake and told us girls about his days back in Ibiza, my sister pulled me into the kitchen. " I was in Paris last week, how's dad?"
" He's alright. I took him to the doctor a few days ago and they said he was doing fine, which took a lot of stress off of me."
" Thats good! I've been and abou. Thats why I'm here."
" I'm glad to see you in the United States since you've been on ice all over Europe."
" Yeah......Oh my goodness! I forgot to tell you! A few weeks ago, I saw your friend...uh...Michael!"
" Michael? Michael who? I know many."
" The Michael that we lived like literatley a block away from? It was...Jackson! Yeah thats right I think....Michael Jackson."
My stomach dropped, but I acted cool. " Oh yeah? When did you see him?"
" Well, the seventeen magazine wanted to take pictures of me so I went and the paparazzi arrived as well. Tons of stars were everywhere, and I had just with the corner of my eye saw him getting into a limo with...uh...whats her name?"
" What's HER name?"
" I remember now! It was Brooke. Brook Shields. She was with him."
" Oh." I said, as her name echoed over and over in my mind. Then I imaged her luscious wavy brown hair, blue eyes, pearly white teeth and perfectly fit body. I had never felt this way before! Torn but....envious.
It was quite uncalled for because I did like Brooke. But I never knew she'd be with Michael. Honestly.
It had been now six years since our face met or even talked. And about this situation I never knew how he felt. I guess he found another woman.
" Jeni, you alright?"
" What? Oh yeah, I....I'm fine! Could you um....grab me a plate? I'm gonna slice myself a-"
All of a sudden, I heard my sister in the living room yelling, " Dad?? Dad?!!!?"
My sister and I ran into the living room. My father was clenching his shirt, with a scruffy face and was trying to breathe. He dropped his fork and he almost fell out of his chair. I went to go catch him before he landed on the ground.
" Chris, call 911!"
" What's going on?!?" Amelie asked, puzzled and panicing.
" Dad's having a heart attack, " I say, " He's got chest pain and shortness of breath."
" Dad, were getting you ambulance." " Hello?"
" Hi, uh..my Dad's having a heart attack right now and hes in unbelievable chest pain. We need help, fast!" Chris said to the man answering the phone.
" Okay,"
She exchanged our adress with the man and within a few minutes we could hear a siren on our street.
Three men came in and quickly put my father on the gurney, and rolled him into the ambulance outside.
" When did this happen, ma'am?"
" All of a sudden--about five minutes ago."
" Has he had any health problems or anything?"
I paused, " He's had health issues and heart cancer."
He nodded his head while I talked, and when I finished he closed his notebook.
" Thank you, Ma'am."
The men shut the back doors of the ambulace car, and drove off with the siren going off like crazy. I said a little prayer, that God be watching over him while they examine him.
Watching the truck speed through our street to the hospital was a flashback with my mother. Just that feeling of being in black and white....the heart rate monitor gone down...cant breathe....face covered in blood and bruises..only at the age of nine I witnessed this. And it was tragic. " Okay, " I let loose from Amelie, and picked up my purse, taking out my car keys, " I'm going to the hospital. Chris, you stay with Amelie at the house and call aunt Zola."
" Why cant we go?"
" Because I want you to be able to know at home if we still have a father or not."
