His ‘Humble’ Home
After we threw our bags into Soren’s car we drove our way to his home. It felt like forever until he told us that we were five minutes away.
“So Soren, where do you live? I always thought that you just appeared out of nowhere… It sure seems that way.” Ally propped herself in between Soren and I. Soren had insisted that he and I rode in the front.
He glanced and Ally and gave her a warm smile. She quickly saw it and batted her eyelashes. Something in me changed quickly. I glared at the window.
“Well Ally, I’m not a vampire. I actually sleep.” He smiled.
Wait do vampire exist? I mean if we exist, they must exist too. Right?
“Are they real though? The vampires I mean.” Kat spoke my unspoken question. She glanced at Soren.
Soren’s expression quickly changed from a silly disposition to a sullen one. He gulped and nodded quickly.
From his quick change in demeanor, we gathered enough information to know that these so-called vampires were bad news.
“Okay girls we are almost there. Sorry for my home in advance.” He stopped the car in front of a big brass gate. He lowered the window and pressed a button on an intercom.
“Who may you be?” A thick accented Italian man answered.
“It’s me. Let me in God damn it!” Soren honked the horn.
A quick buzz came from the other side. The gates were pulled apart and we heard faint footsteps from the other side.
“In advance girls, I am terribly sorry not just for my humble home, but for the disasters that live in it. Lucy, I am so sorry for everything that is going to happen here forth. Just know that whatever either my Dad or Katerina say about anything at all, is not true.” He held my shoulders and stared straight at me.
There go all the tiny frogs in my stomach.
I have so many thoughts in my head right now. The kiss being one, how strange this is, and who is Katerina?
I quickly nod realizing I have been staring at his stormy eyes for quite a long time.
Kat taps my shoulder and opens the car door for me. I muttered thanks to her and pulled all my bags from the back. I didn’t know how long I was to stay with Soren so I packed all the basic things, until Ally came into the room. She scolded me for being so naïve and boyish.
She packed tons of dresses and some shoes that I didn’t even know I had. She even managed to fit some formal and black tie attire.
I pulled my backpack onto my back and mentally checked if I had everything I needed.
I was walking toward Soren to give him a quick hug and tell him thanks for being there for us. I stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted a beautiful red head in a flowy white dress running towards him.
Maybe she was a sister? Now of course not, she doesn’t look remotely like him. Maybe she is his lover. She must be Katerina then.
I pang of jealousy sprouted in me when she grabbed him and planted a sloppy kiss full on his lips. I blinked and breathed in. I shouldn’t be jealous.
But you are anyway.
Shut up! I seriously need to stop talking to myself.
Soren visibly tensed and pushed her off of him. He glanced at my sisters and I and smiled slightly.
“Guys this is Katerina.” He shoved her in front of us. She smiled brightly.
She seems lovely.
“Hey! I’m Kat. These are my sisters Ally and Lucy. Nice to meet you Katerina.” Kat gave her a small handshake.
Katerina’s eyes widened and sparkled a bit.
“You guys are the La Belle sisters? Soren, baby, you never told me you actually knew them!” Katerina smiled and let her dimples show.
Do you think she’s a natural red head?
She must be… She sounds Scottish.
Not all Scottish people are red heads!
True.
You see I’m doing it again! I keep speaking to myself… Maybe its just because I’m nervous.
“Not to be rude but,” Ally paused. Oh no, every time Ally puts ‘not to be rude’, she was bound to make someone uncomfortable. “Who the heck are you?”
Katerina didn’t look offended or taken back, she just looked well… For lack of better word, perfect. She was perfectly sweet.
In fact she giggled.
“I’m Katerina, Soren’s fiancé.” She smiled up at him. I stood there mouth agape and utterly shocked. I felt jealous, hurt, and most of all confused. I looked at Soren who was staring right at me. He looked pained for a quick second before returning to his usual stoic self.
“Congratulations. Congratulations to both of you.” My mouth spoke before I thought about it. Kat looked taken back. She knew exactly how I felt about Soren.
Even though I tried my best to convince her it was a mere infatuation with the poor lad, she insisted it was more than a silly crush. Being the helpless romantic that she is, she told me that she was almost certain that is was true love. Love at first sight if you want to call it that.
“Let’s go inside.” Soren advised. After everyone walked ahead of us Soren held a hand out for me to take.
I stared at it, then at him. I gave him my most cold stare I could muster. I shook my head disapprovingly at him. I jogged up quickly to meet with Kat who waited for me, unlike Ally who laughed loudly with Katerina and discussed wedding plans.
Kat looked at me with worry. “If its any consolation, I don’t like her. She isn’t fit for him.”
I rolled my eyes at her. “And I am? We only met a few weeks ago. She’s beautiful and happy.”
She looped our arms together and kissed my cheek.
“So? You are smart, beautiful, and brave. Plus you have magic powers.” She winked at me and gave me a quick side hug.
We finally got to the front of the house and I looked at the giant house that stood tall and proud in front of us.
This is supposed to be his “humble” home?
