Chapter 5.
Before I knew it, it was Tuesday again. The whole week Nat had been grooming Summer and I in the routine for try-outs, which I said was cheating. Nat justfied this by saying there was basically a 99% chance of Summer and I getting in, so she might aswell use us to her advantage, and put us in the game on Friday. I had my doubts about this, but I'd come to learn that arguing with Nat when she had her mind set on something, was a death sentence.
Settling into school was going quite well, and I was becoming more comfortable with the people around me. I was thankful that is was so easy; I knew a lot of people came into new schools and didn’t have many friends by the end of year, let alone by the end of the first week. School was ok; the work load was a lot, but I was coping quite well I thought. I’d been filling Charlie and the girls in on everything, ringing Charlie nearly every night, not being able to hide from the fact that even though I was settling in well, I still dearly missed my home and the people I’d left behinf.
Tuesday morning I woke up deciding to miss my run since I had been practising the whole week, and I knew I would be working myself hard today. I went downstairs to eat breakfast with Funda and my Dad; who was actually home for a change.
“Morning” I chirped as I plopped myself down at the table.
“Morning” Funda smiled.
“Morning Darling” My Dad said behind his newspaper.
“So I’m trying out for the cheer leading squad today” I stated before tucking into my Spanish omelette.
“Really?” My Dad asked putting down his newspaper and taking of his reading glasses.
“Yup”
“Well I think that’s a wonderful idea Dennyse! I used to a cheerleader” Funda said.
"In Italy?" I questioned.
"No Darling, here"
“You grew up in America?” I asked surprised, since even though her accent was faint; it was still noticeable.
“No no, my Dada was a surgeon so we moved here when I was 15, so I finished High School, then I attended college here and went back to Italy till I met your Dad” She explained.
“Ah, I see” I smiled. "So there will potenially be two cheerleaders under one roof!" I said making Funda laugh.
“Well, I'm glad you've found something extra-curricular Dennyse but ust be careful ok?” My Dad added.
“Dad seriously don’t worry, I’ve been jumping of beams since I was 5 remember?” I smiled picking up my plate, jumping down off the island and skipping across the vast kitchen towards the sink.
“Dennis?” I turned and looked at my Dad surprised; he hadn’t called me Dennis in years. The name had developed from when I was little, and naughty Dennie used to come out; hence Dennis the Menace, but as I got older it had become a sign of affection.
“Yes Dad”
“Is that what you’re wearing to school?” He said looking me up and down an amused look on his face. Confused I looked at him for a few seconds before looking down at myself realising I was still in my pyjamas.
“Shit! Dad why didn’t you tell me earlier I have like half an hour!” I screamed shoving my plate in the sink and sprinting the length of the house towards the foyer, up the stairs and to my room. I had a quick 5 minute shower, knowing I’d have to shower after try outs. I skidded out the shower, grabbing a towel and into my room picking up my phone, flicking through my contacts and clicking on Summer.
