I rode in the back of the ambulance with Sam, watching his motionless body. I foggily remembered Cas and Gabe saying that they'd follow close behind in their car and meet us there, but all I was thinking about right then was if Sam was going to be alright. I had watched the paramedics quickly stabilize him, but he still looked awful. When we finally got to the hospital, I had to quickly move out of the way as the paramedics rushed him out of the vehicle and through the doors of the building.
"He looks pretty bad, and from the speed at which the car hit him, he could need emergency surgery." one of them had said.
"Yeah, but don't worry. Doctor Madion is in, and he's the best we've got! Just wait here and somebody will be out to get you as soon as we know anything." another one had said.
So there I waited.
Not long thereafter, Cas and Gabriel arrived, saw me, and ran quickly over.
"Do you know anything yet? Is he okay?"Gabe frantically asked.
"No, they said he might have to have emergency surgery though. But it's not determined yet. Somebody should be out to fill us in hopefully soon." I answered.
"Oh God." replied Gabriel and Cas practically in unison as they slumped into chairs on either side of me.
"Um, Gabe, I never really got a chance to ask you this earlier, because it was obviously bad timing, but since we have to wait here I might as well ask, how do you even know Sam?"
It took him a little while to reply, and was Gabriel Novak... blushing???
"Oh, um, I guess you don't know, but uh Sam and I are kinda dating. " he answered awkwardly.
WHAT?! Sam has a BOYFRIEND?! And he didn't tell me...? Well, I guess I'm not the only one in the family then who likes dudes...
"Oh... I never knew... that's cool though, how'd you guys meet?" I responded.
"Computer skills class. We got partnered up for a project and---" he began before a chubby, nice looking nurse came bustling over to us.
"Which one of you is the family member?" she asked.
I raised my hand.
"Hi sweetie, I'm nurse Patty and I'm here to tell you that your brother is doing fine and may actually not need that emergency surgery! "
I let out the breath that I hadn't even realized I'd been holding.
"But he does have a concussion, a broken rib, a broken wrist, a broken collar bone, and a twisted ankle. Poor little guy's all banged up! He's currently sedated, so honey I'm gonna have to have you and your friends here tell the nice police man exactly what happened." she said as she motioned to a cop I hadn't noticed standing by the door.
So after we all told the officer what had happened, the nurse told us we could go in to see Sam. She led us back through some doors and down a hallway, where we followed her into a room. And there was Sam. He was asleep, but he was hooked up and wrapped up to and in so many things, I practically burst into tears at the sight of him. I felt Cas grab my arm, and was grateful for it. I looked over and saw that Gabe was sobbing. I reached over and pulled him and Cas into a huge, slightly disgruntled, hug. I don't know how long we stood there, just holding on to each other, but when we finally slowly released each other and sank into chairs next to Sam's bed, it was nearly dark outside.
"You guys can go home if you'd like, I wouldn't want you two getting in trouble or something" I said.
"No way, we're staying. I called our dad on the way here and told him where'd we be. We're not leaving until you do." Cas replied. Gabe nodded in agreement.
I couldn't help but smile.
