Ashton watched in horror as Michael vomited onto the concrete floor. Luke couldn't have killed Abby. he was too... Luke. harmless.
and yet, the evidence. Luke was the only one in the room with Abby, as far as they know. there was also the little part about his arm being covered in drying blood.
Ashton was thinking to himself when he felt a pinch of pain on his left arm. looking down, he saw that he had been scratching it hard enough to leave small red welts on his arm. that's strange, Ashton thought. i didn't even realize i had been scratching it in the first place.
Haven looked at her best friend. she was dirty, her make-up was smeared down her face from crying so much, and her hair looked like she had put it through a meat grinder, but to Haven, she looked as beautiful as ever.
"Jules?" Haven whispered, catching the attention of the shorter girl. "i need to talk to you."
Juliet nodded and let Haven lead her from the room that smelled like death into the hallway.
"what's wrong?" Juliet questioned, pouting her lips ever so slightly. Haven loved it when she did that.
"i, uh, have to tell you something. you know, just in... just in case." Haven stuttered; she could barely get the words out of her mouth. Juliet nodded, looking confused and a little worried.
Haven took a deep breath and continued. "i've been meaning to tell you this for a while now, actually, it's just that i-" she was cut off by the sound of slow, careful footsteps coming from the way they had come in.
footsteps that were headed this way.
panicking, Juliet ran from Haven and went back into the room where their other friends were. "guys, someone's coming, we have to go!" she whispered harshly, tugging of Ashton's shirt. Michael stood up quickly and grabbed Luke, pulling him away from Abby's body and into the hallway.
the thing that was making the footsteps was now so close that the group of friends could hear it whistling a circus tune. Michael's stomach filled with dread; it was the clown. he knew it with a sickening sense of certainty.
"we have to hide!" Michael whispered in his take-charge voice. no one hesitated. the group split, everyone running for a hiding place.
Ashton ended up with Luke in one of the many side rooms of the fun house. similar to the last room, there was only a small, dingy lightbulb adorning it.
"ten," Luke giggled, glancing at Ashton out of the corner of his eye. Ashton held a finger up to his lips to quiet the younger boy, and was shocked to find that he tasted blood.
looking down at his arm, Ashton's stomach gave a lurch. he had scratched through several layers of skin.
"nine," Luke continued. Ashton realised with a jolt of fear that he was counting down.
"eight, seven, six,"
Ashton tried shushing Luke, but Luke just ended up giggling and continuing anyway. Ashton felt tears begin to slip down his face. "Lukey, stop, you're scaring me," Ashton pleaded.
"five! four!" Luke shouted the numbers, oblivious to Ashton's sobs.
"Luke, stop!"
"three,"
"no. Luke,"
"two,"
the blonde haired boy slowly turned to look at Ashton, a look of pure terror etched onto his features. a single tear slip out of his clear blue eyes that reminded Ashton so much of the cold winter days when he and his friends would stay inside and drink hot chocolate and play games until they felt like stopping, which usually didn't happen until Calum fell asleep. Calum.
Ashton's heart hurt.
"one." Luke whispered, almost inaudible.
then, with a resounding boom, the lights shut off and they were pitched into pure darkness. everything was dead quiet for a moment before Luke took in a shaky breath beside Ashton.
"here he comes."
