Embarrassment is not a usual occurrence for me. Sure I've had my share of blush-worthy moments but other than that, I've kinda always been the one embarrassing others (me being a spoilt brat and all).

But then that was in Rockenville and we were in Damson, a new town, a new environment. And you know what they say, new environment new and more embarrassing moments. Okay so nobody actually said that but back to the important fact, me contemplating suicide at this moment.

"Bel, say hi "
I realized that I was gapping all this while.

" Um..... I..... Um.... "

"I guess the word your looking for is hi? "

The dude had now stood up and was extended his hand towards me. I hadn't noted how freakishly tall this dude was. As he took a step towards me I noticed how actually attractive he was. His eyes were a colour that lay in between grey and blue and his skin was a bit tanned. He wasn't really well built but a sneak of muscle popped out of his shirt. This dude though.........

I was just contemplating how silky his dark brown hair would feel against my fingers when dad cleared his throat getting my attention. OMIGOSH! I had been ogling at him!!! I realized his hand was slowly retracting from where it had been held out for a handshake.

"Derrick here will be taking you to the fair and introducing you to a couple of people " mum said as she stiffened a laugh at my horrid situation.

" I'm also a sophomore " Derrick stated. Unable to speak I nodded. If I didn't have this skin tone I would probably be a tomato head right now. Then it hit me!!!!!
" Mum, what day is it? "

" Friday, why? "

" No I'm asking which day of the month "

She glanced at her phone this time before answering," 23rd of...... " she trailed off as her eyes became saucers.

I knew it!!!!!!

Dear stalker of my life let me explain something, the Haman curse of the 23rd. Everything bad happened on the twenty-third and not only to me, but the whole Haman family.

My dad's father, my grandpa Jill, died on a 23rd, my mum's family's house caught fire when she was a baby on the 23rd, my dad lost his first job on the 23rd when he was a teenager and most importantly, Kaylee died on the 23rd, exactly a month ago.

I groaned and settled down on the couch covering my face with my hands. "I can't go".

Dad sat down beside me pulling my hands from my face before declaring with a tone in his voice that I recognize all too well, " Bella Jones Haman, you listen to me, I did not raise you to be a coward, this day may not be the best day in the world for us but come on, don't let this sick excuse of day get the best of you."

" But daddy it's the 23rd, The 23rd........"I put emphasis on the 23rd.

"I guess I'll leave now...... It seems she's staying so I better just be going ? " Derrick posed it more than a question than a statement. The smug expression which had earlier been on his face had changed to confusion but now he was just downright uncomfortable.

" No way mister, go get your car ready, she's going alright " mum said. Derrick didn't have to be told twice and was already out the door when mum continued pointing at me ." And you, turn that frown upside-down, I mean who are you? The Bel I know wouldn't just sit here like her whole family died of plague. Were you not the one who gave us a thirty minutes' speech telling us that the only way the curse will get to you is when you're dead? I want that Bella not this weak excuse of a girl. "

" Mum, that was before Kaylee died"

"Well then you're just going to give in to the curse? Cause that ain't my daughter. I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure I don't know you then. " she crossed her hands in front of her chest and shook her head in disgust. That pretty much did it.

" Fine! I'll go!! "

" Great! " dad said before he basically dragged me to the door.
I walked to the door of the new looking Mercedes on our driveway. I spotted Derrick on the driver's seat bending over on his phone with a deep frown on his face. Just before I got in I managed to hear mum shout from the front door "Go kick some ass hon!! "

"UGH!"

I buckled up while muttering some profanities before I looked up to see Derrick staring at me obviously on the verge of laughter.

"Don't even think about it Boot Boy or I swear I'll........ "

He didn't even let me finish before he exploded in laughter.

" A gardener...... boot boy...... I can't even....... "he said in between chuckles.

" Listen here 'cowboy', I don't wanna be here so do me a favor and just drive cause right now cause guess what I'd rather not be here"

I guess he must have gotten the message because he started the car without any word.

I could feel him stare at me even as I tried to concentrate on my surroundings. "Eyes on the road player" I muttered not even offering him a glance.

"So, where did you move from "

" I didn't come for small talk fella "
" Stop acting so stubborn for once. Don't you even realize I might be your only social hope right now "

I glared at him but I bit back a retort before giving him a simple " Rockenville "

" See, that wasn't so hard now was it?"
I rolled my eyes before looking out the window.
"You have a weird family," he says.
I turn to him clenching my fist about to sucker punch the guy as he drives but then I realize, he's right.
I certainly cannot call a family that consists of a white man who still believes in curses (and the boogie man but let's just keep it on the down low) a loco, overprotective Latino lady(and this couple just happens to be owners of the biggest companies in America) And their adopted black daughter who not only believes in curses but also ghosts.
But instead of pointing that out, I turn forward and say, "That's My Kind Of Family."
He bellowed out a laugh.

Before I could give him a smart ass comment, he announced" We're here! " before grabbing a cowboy hat from the back seat and getting out.

I got out before saying to him " What is this a rodeo?"

He smirked before saying "Oops, I forgot." before tipping his hat in mock salute before turning to walk away. Panic gripped me.

I caught up with him to ask before I caught a glimpse at something that made my blood boil in anger but also made my stomach tighten in fear.

People all headed to the fair, dressed in......

Derrick got closer to my ears before whispering "Welcome to the annual Damson Summer Costume Town Fair."
