Maya's POV

I walked around my apartment as I waited for my boyfriend to call me on Skype, because he had gone home to Austin, Texas for Christmas this year. I'd been waiting for a week for him to call, but I figured he was busy with preparation for Christmas, and that's why he hadn't called yet.

I sat down on the couch and suddenly my laptop started making sounds, so I picked it up, and sure enough, Lucas was calling me on Skype. I picked up, smiling from ear to ear.

"Hey" I said through my smile.
"Hey my blonde beauty." He said, chuckling.
"How's Texas?" I say, cuddling under blankets to keep warm.
"Oh, you know. Same old, same old." He said.
I laughed a little, and I sipped a bit of my hot chocolate.
"How's New York?" He asked me, sitting down on an old leather couch.
"Hectic" I say, rolling my eyes.
"I miss you" I pipe up after a few seconds of silence.
"I miss you too. I'll be home soon, I promise." He said, holding up his pinky.
I laughed and blew him a kiss before shutting my laptop off because the battery was low. I plugged it in, and went to lay down.
I'd had a long couple of days, wrapping gifts, babysitting my neighbour's 1 year old, and visiting friends and family I didn't see often, before the holidays rolled around. I managed to visit Darby and Yogi, Sarah, Yindra, my dad, my mom and Shawn, and Dave, who still really likes corn chips.

I fell asleep instantly.

Lucas's POV

After Maya hung up, I went back to work. I had a few minutes to relax, and I wanted to spend them talking to Maya. I had been working non-stop for a week so that on Christmas Eve, I would have enough to fly back to New York, and surprise Maya by asking her to marry me on Christmas. So far, I have enough money for the trip back, but the ring was still a couple hundred dollars more than I had.

I kept reminding myself "I'm going to be home for Christmas. I have to be home for Maya."

Eventually, I got enough money to buy Maya's ring.
I bought the ring that day and headed back to New York the next. It was Christmas Eve, and I thought poor Maya was home alone.

Except she wasn't.

Maya's POV
Riley was with me for the entire weekend. I hadn't seen her much since we graduated collage, so, we went shopping, had our nails done, got our hair trimmed, and watched Netflix while eating pizza because, well, why not? I'd had never had this much fun on the holidays, although I wished Lucas was there with me as well.

Finally Christmas rolled around and I was lounging around my place before heading to the Matthew's for dinner and presents. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. I perked up and answered, only to be disappointed by the mailman. I grabbed the cards and started opening them one by one.
Friend after friend after friend, I had gotten bored of opening cards, but she read the last one 'From Austin, Texas'
"Lucas!" I squealed out loud and opened it up.
It was a picture of us as Juniors in High School, and on the inside was an adorable message.
"Hey Maya, I know I'm not there right now, I wish I was. I miss you a lot, and I can't wait to come back home and see everyone, especially you. Riley has been texting me non-stop about your time together this weekend. I'm glad you're having fun down there, even if I'm away for the holidays. Keep your spirits up my beautiful blonde short stack of pancakes. I'll see you soon xxx - Lucas
P.S. Merry Christmas ya filthy animal ❤️" I laughed and put the card beside my bed. Just seeing his somewhat messy writing filled my heart with warmth and joy. I looked at the time, and realized I had to leave for the Matthew's in 20 minutes, and I wasn't even close to being ready.

So, I threw her hair into a quick French side braid, applied a bolder makeup look than usual (sharp liner, cool smokey eye, mascara, red lipstick, and a peachy blush) and got into my red t-shirt, black jeans, and brown knee high boots. I put a beanie on, grabbed my leather jacket and left.
