Darkness fell covering the town of Forks with a blanket of thick cloud and sheets upon sheets of rain, the street lights flickered on as the wind picked up, swaying the trees left to right in its strangle hold of cold emptiness. The rain battered the roof and ran down the windows blurring any view there may have been outside the house.
Dean stood at the kitchen window watching and wishing he'd parked the Impala closer, downing his last mouthful of beer from his second can of the night, not a big fan of light beer but figured he couldn't be rude and turn down his hosts offer of free booze. Sam sat at the kitchen table with Billy, Jacob and Bella playing poker for pretzels, whilst Charlie broke out a pizza menu.
"Fullhouse!" Jacob called smiling widely, Billy and Bella moaned as they threw their cards onto the table, Jacob rubbed his hands together before leaning over the pile of salty snacks and begining to pull them towards him, but Sam sat and stared at him shaking his head. Jacob caught his gaze from the corner of his eye pausing a second.
"Jacob, Jacob, Jacob..." Sam pulled in a breath from behind gritted teeth and then laid down his cards. "Read um and weep kid." Dean looked over and laughed "OOOOH! Jacob got done, ha ha ha, well done Sammy," he ruffled Sam's hair as he went back over to the window opening another can of light beer. "Taught him everythin' he knows."
"How in the hell did you get a royal flush dude?" Sam pulled the pile of pretzels over and ate one as he shrugged, "I have no idea." Charlie put the phone down and leaned up against the kitchen counter. "How are you boys gonna get back ta' the cabin?" He looked at Dean then Sam. "I'll be driving, Dean won't drive his pride and joy whilst under the influence."
"Good, so while we wait for the food shall we clear the table and get down ta' business?" Bella passed Billy a bowl for the pretzels while Jacob grabbed the cards and put them back in the box. Dean passed Sam his backpack, pulled up a chair to the table and straddled it as Sam pulled out his laptop.
"Hey Bells, can you and Jacob excuse us?" Charlie took his wallet from his pocket and handed her the cash for the pizzas.
"Sure Char... I mean dad." she smiled taking the cash then going into the small living area a few feet away, Jacob followed and sat beside her on the couch switching the tv on by the remote.
Billy looked over making sure that the kids were out of earshot, whist Sam and Dean shared their findings.
"So..." Sam began, "...baring in mind we haven't been out to the site where the last hikers went missing and we kinda got side tracked to say the least, so we haven't done our usual route of questioning witnesses and stuff..."
"Cut ta' the point dude." Dean pressed, Charlie crossed his arms over his chest and listened as did Billy.
"Okay, with the information Charlie put together..." he held up the file he'd been given earlier that day and put it on the table, Billy reached for it and scaned through, "..and the information I dug up on the net...theres nothing that points to animal attacks, other than the coroners reports. But, there have been people disappearing in Seatle and those disappearances stopped when the hikers here started going missing..."
"So, you think it could be a human doing this?" Charlie said looking confused, Dean shrugged. "We're not 100% sure if 'human' is the right word to describe it..." Sam said routing in his backpack.
"But what about all these bear sightings? surely all the people that have reported it, can't all be just seeing things" Sam looked at Charlie as Dean opend and switched on the computer.
"We have no doubt that there could be a bear, it might only be coming this close to town because its looking for food..." Sam replied bringing their dads journal out of his bag finally and opening it up to a page he'd marked earlier.
"Well, if what you say is true there Sam, it looks like I'm gonna have ta' get a hold of some extra strong tranquillizers, the last person to see the animal said it was at least 8 feet tall..." Billy huffed as Dean's eyes went wide and he coughed a little. "Umm...8 feet? thats one hell of a big bear!" Sam looked at Billy "What do you think Billy? you said earlier that the kids up on the reservation had seen something..." before Billy managed to say anything there was a knock at the door, Bella had gone to answer it as Jacob came and stood beside Charlie.
"You guys talking about that giant black dog?" The three men paused and stared at him for a second. "Jacob..." Billy scowled at him. "What dad? these guys have come here to help."
"A black dog?" Dean looked at Jacob then Sam, who then handed Charlie the journal. "What the..?" his eyes went wide for a second as he took in the information on the pages, he went over to the window where the table had been and perched on the windowsill as he read.
"There is no black dog..." Billy tutted and half laughed, though there was no humor in it.
"They where making that up to scare the children, like when they add things onto the tribal legends."
"Which are?" Dean said now looking in Billy's direction, Charlie got up and went back over placing the journal open on the table in front of Billy, he looked over the pages, with rushed but neat military precision handwriting and detailed drawings, then let out a heavy sigh.
"Hey guys pizzas here..." Bella paused "Umm, am I interrupting something?" They all shook their heads, Sam closed the journal quickly and leaned back in his chair with a small smile.
"No Bells, we're good, here let me take those..." she handed Charlie the pizzas, while she scanned the room of guys.
"Huh...well, you guys enjoy your pizza I'm gonna go ta' bed." she finally said, backing away towards the stairs.
"Goodnight Bella!" the chorus of deep husky male voices came all at once, she blushed before disappearing up to her room closing the door behind her. Dean turned his attention back to Billy who tilted his head looking at first Sam then back at Dean linking his fingers and placing his hands in his lap he looked up to Jacob. "Jacob, could you show Sam here that website you found on the black dogs?"
"Sure, sure. Charlie can we..." Charlie nodded "Yeah, if Bella ain't using it." He pointed towards the line he'd had put in, Sam grabbed his computer and went with Jacob.
"The Quileute tribe legends haven't really been shared with outsiders..."
"Billy, if they shed any light on whats been happening around here, I'm pretty damn sure me and Sam knowing a few ins and outs ain't gonna hurt"
"In the long term I guess you are right..." He took in a deep breath then began.
