Later, Spencer and Toby were lying on the floor playing Clue. "Miss Scarlet in the Conservatory with the candlestick." Toby knew that he was right on this. Spencer groaned, of course he was right. There was a knock at the door. Spencer jumped up, and opened the door.
Spencer couldn't believe what she saw standing by the door to the loft. "Dean? Is that really you?" Spencer was grinning now.
"Yeah, Spence, it's me." Dean replied and pulled her into a hug. After they parted, they blabbed to each other.
Toby walked up, and cleared his throat "Who's this, Spencer?"
"Oh, yeah. Toby, this is Dean, my old drug counselor. Dean, this is my fiancee, Toby. Toby, you were always gone when Dean was here." Dean reached his hand out to shake Toby's, but Toby ignored it, and instead embraced Dean in a hug.
"Thank you so so much... Dean, right?" Toby asked thinking he was correct with the name.
"Yeah. One question: What did I do?" Dean asked confused.
"You helped Spencer when I wasn't here for her. Thank you for that." The whole time the boys talked, Spencer just stood there listening. She felt her heart warm at how well the boys were getting along.
All of a sudden, she was crying. She didn't know what had come over her. She felt one of their arms wrap around her shoulders, probably Toby. Dean's hand came to rest on her back in a comforting manner.
"Spence, are you okay? What's wrong? Are you okay?" Toby kept repeating these words until she responded.
"I'm fine, I'm fine." Both of the boys sighed of relief. "Well, not really, but I guess I'm okay." The boys stared at her waiting. There were tears still running down her face. She looked at Toby, then switched her gaze to Dean. They both just stared at her, waiting for her to say something.
"Uh, can we just catch up, Dean? I would really appreciate it. I missed you. We haven't seen each other for like two years." Spencer asked, waiting to get the topic off of her, and onto something else.
"Yeah, sure, of course, Spence." Dean replied. Dean sat down in the chair. Spencer and Toby sat down on the couch, her wrapped in her arms snuggling close. The two slowly caught up, while Toby listened and held Spencer tight. He knew Spencer was in a fragile state, and he wanted her to know that he was always there for her.
Her and Dean talked about what they had been doing the past few years. Toby eventually stopped listening. He thought about how much he hadn't been there for Spencer when she needed him most. This Dean guy was always there for her when he wasn't. Maybe it was Dean she loved and not him. Spencer felt Toby's hold lossen on him, and she turned around to meet his eyes. Of course, Toby was looking somewhere else. Spencer got off of the couch and looked into his eyes. "It's okay. I know what your thinking. I love you, Toby. Not him. I love him as a brother, or a friend, but not like I love you. It's okay." Spencer kept repeating this to him until he nodded his head.
