Chapter Four

I woke up that Saturday morning feeling more tired than I was when I had gone to bed. Not to mention it was nearly 11:00. That’s what you get for staying up until three in the morning watching ‘Paranormal Activity Two’, I mentally scolded myself.

I was an all-out, die-hard Paranormal Activity fan. I just can’t get enough of scary movies, even though they rarely freak me out. Gabriel enjoys them too, but Annabelle refuses to be within a three yard radius of the T.V. while a horror movie is on.

Last year, she was supposed to stay for a sleepover, but I found The Shining on Netflix and she called her mom to come pick her up. I teased her about it for weeks, but she said she’d rather be teased than be haunted for all of eternity. I have no idea how we’re friends.

We’re complete opposites.

I pulled myself out of bed, and trudged my half-asleep self to the bathroom down the hall, hoping that a good shower would wake me up.

It did.

Well, sort of.

After blow drying my hair and getting dressed, I went downstairs to find my Dad making breakfast. Pancakes. My favorite.

“Morning dad,” I said cheerfully.

“Good morning.”

I got a plate out of the cupboard and served myself two of the pancakes that were already finished. I added some syrup on top, but not enough for the pancakes to take a swim. I don’t have that much of a sweet tooth.

“Mmm, these are really good today,” I commented, after I swallowed a few bites.

“Better than your mothers?”

I was a little surprised at him for bringing her up.

My mom and dad were divorced. It had been that way since I was eight years old, and even though I was fifteen then, they still hadn’t really told me why. My mom lived all the way in California so I only saw her a few times each year. But that was okay with me. I’d always been closer with my dad anyway.

“Tied,” I said. Mom was known for her signature pancakes, so there was no way they were better.

I just wanted to make Dad happy.

Once I had finished my breakfast, I put on my converse sneakers, a purple hoodie, and (with my Dad’s permission), headed out. Gabe, Annabelle, and I had plans to go see a movie that day. But, Annabelle texted me the night before that she couldn’t make it because of her sister’s piano recital. So it was just going to be me and Gabriel.

We planned to meet at 12:30 to see Man of Steel, and grab some lunch afterwards.

But things didn’t go as planned.

When I arrived at Midway Theater, the line wasn’t too bad. There were mostly parents and kids waiting to see that new Monster’s Inc. movie that had just come out. I looked up at the movie times, pleased to find that Man of Steel was showing at 12:45.

Just then, I felt my phone in my back pocket buzz. I pulled it out quickly, hating the way it felt when the damn thing vibrated against my butt.

It was a text from Gabriel.

Sorry, gonna be a little late. Missed my bus.

I sighed. If that boy was ever on time, I’d think the world was ending.

The movie starts in 15, so run if you have to :P

I typed, before putting the phone back in my pocket. Soon enough, it was my turn for tickets. “Two for Man of Steel, please,” I said politely, handing the woman a twenty dollar bill.

“Make that three,” A familiar voice said behind me, slipping her a ten dollar bill. I turned around, almost surprised to see him.

Trevor.

“What are you doing here?”

“Me and Ryan planned to see Man of Steel too, but he bailed on me last minute,” He explained. I turned back around, retrieving the tickets and change.

“Enjoy your movie!” The woman said, as we walked into the theater.

“Here,” I said, handing him his ticket and two dollars change.

“Is it alright if I see it with you instead?” Trevor asked, although it wasn’t really a question. By sneaking up on me like that, he had practically already invited himself.

“Me and Gabriel,” I corrected. “He’s just running a little late.

“Oh.” Trevor’s face fell.

“I don’t mind, but not so sure about him. I mean, I know you guys don’t get along much and stuff…” I trailed off when I noticed Gabriel walking towards us.

“Hey,” He greeted me, not looking at Trevor. “Can I talk to you for a sec?”

“Be right back,” I said to Trevor, since Gabriel already began pulling me away.

“What the hell is he doing here?”

“He said his friend didn’t show up and he wanted to see Man of Steel anyway,” I said. “He asked to see it with us.”

“You do know that me and Trevor aren’t exactly friends, right?”

“Yeah. But there’s no reason not to be.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Trevor is my friend, okay? And I don’t have to be a jerk to him just because you are.”

“Fine, whatever,” Gabriel groaned in defeat. “But he better not show up every time we plan to hang out.”

“He won’t, trust me.” That being said, Gabe and I walked back over to Trevor, who was standing on the popcorn line. “You guys want anything?” He asked.

“We’re good,” Gabriel answered for both of us, before attempting to pull me away again. I pulled my arm out of his grasp. “Actually, I’d like a small popcorn,” I said, giving Gabriel a hard look. I took five dollars out of my pocket.

“No it’s fine. It’s on me,” Trevor said kindly.

“No, you don’t have to, really,” I pleaded.

“I know I don’t have to. But I want to.”

I smiled. “Thanks. You’re the best.”

I could feel Gabriel cringe. “We’re gonna go-”

“Find a seat,” I finished. God knows what Gabriel actually wanted to say.

The two of us walked off. “I know I don’t have to, but I want to.” He repeated in an obnoxious voice, as soon as Trevor was out of sight. I laughed. It did sound pretty funny.

“Can you try to be nice, at least?”

“Nope,” Gabe said, popping out the ‘p’.

I sighed. This was going to be a long day.
