Chapter Five
I was sitting in history class, nearly bored to tears when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned to my right to find Gabriel with a small, crumpled piece of paper in his hand. He quickly glanced at Mr. McKinley before tossing it over to me. It landed in my lap.
A note. I opened it up, and my eyes widened when I realized what he had written.
So, since when have you and Trevor been together?
I had to re-read it a second time to comprehend what he was asking.
Since never!
I scribbled the words onto the paper and tossed it over to Gabriel. When I received it back, he had written:
I'm not stupid, and Chase said he saw you guys walking alone together on Metropolitan Avenue the other day. He said Trevor had his arm around you.
I couldn't even remember what Chase looked like. Did I even know the kid? Whoever Chase was, he was a freaking liar. I glanced over at Gabriel and shook my head, while mouthing the words 'not true'.
A little more than a week had passed since the whole Man of Steel debacle had taken place, and Trevor and I did hang out once during the week. He was helping me with my Chemistry homework at the library. We were doing homework. It wasn’t a date.
But still, I hadn’t mentioned it to anyone. People take things the wrong way.
When I turned back to Gabriel, he had just ripped out another piece of paper from the back of his notebook and was writing something else on it.
To just our luck, Mr. McKinley caught him tossing it over to me.
“Passing notes in class I see? Bring them here.” He said sternly.
Gabriel got up from his seat, took both pieces of paper from my hand, and walked to the front of the room. “I'm sure the rest of the class would love to know what was so much more important than my lesson.”
My eyes widened. Crap.
“Anything is more important than your lesson,” Gabriel shot back, before throwing the small pieces of paper in the trash.
“Don't get fresh with me, boy!” Mr. McKinley hollered. I noticed the scared expression of some of the kids in the front row, but Gabriel looked like the scolding hadn't phased him.
“You should be more like your brother! It's hard to believe you two were raised under the same roof!”
I knew that Gabriel didn't get along much with his brother Stephen, and the teacher's comment really seemed to irritate him.
“Fuck off,” He mumbled under his breath, as he slumped back down in his seat.
Gabriel wasn't one to swear often, so I could tell he was definitely pissed about something. The rumor about me and Trevor maybe? Nah, no way.
But whatever it was, it must have been bad because he refused to talk to anyone for the rest of class. Including me.
Gabriel wasn’t the kind of guy who usually shut me out of things. If something was bothering him, I was the first person he’d go to. And vice-versa. I decided to ask him about it after class, when I could get him alone.
I wanted to be there for him, if he needed someone. And I wanted to make him feel better. That’s what best friends are for, right?
When history was finally over, I followed him out of the room. He started speed-walking down the hall, and I had to grab his arm to get his attention. “Gabe, what's wrong?”
