Chapter Thirteen
Monday was such a drag. Not only was it the dreaded first day of the week, but I was also really antsy and uncomfortable for the whole day. The entire school was talking about Trevor's “accident” on the night of the Spring Dance, and during fourth and fifth period, the police came to do some investigating.
A few students were taken out of class and questioned, but luckily I wasn't one of them. I guess I didn’t come off as suspicious, and most of the kids who were pulled out were Trevor’s guy-friends. There were also some seniors and juniors, since the dance was for the upper grades.
The number of sophomores that went to the junior-senior dance was surprising to most of the adults, and there were rumors going around about how one of the seniors had spiked the fruit punch. The principal, Mr. Davidson, was disappointed at the lack of chaperones that had gone to the dance, and as a school wide punishment, all the students and teachers had to stay an extra hour after school for the entire week.
If only it were possible to die of guilt...

When the lunch bell rang, I was glad to finally have some time to talk to Gabriel. I wondered if anyone suspected that he was the one behind Trevor's accident. Many people knew that he and Trevor didn't talk much, but only Annabelle and I knew that they disliked each other.
Annabelle. On Saturday, Gabriel and I agreed not to tell her about the fight. If anyone else knew about it, Gabe and I figured we'd end up in serious trouble, especially considering that Trevor's parents threatened to sue the school. But as it was, it seemed that Trevor probably suffered from amnesia, or something, because he hadn't told anyone that it was Gabriel who hurt him.
“Hey,” I said awkwardly, as I sat down across from Annabelle and Gabriel. She had been whispering something in his ear, and he whispered something back, making her giggle. Neither of them seemed to acknowledge that I was there.
“Hello,” I said a second time, getting their attention.
“Oh, sorry we were just-” She cut herself off with laughter, as Gabriel whispered something else. “Talking.”
“I can see that,” I said, raising one of my eyebrows.
“So what's up?” Annabelle asked, kindly averting her eyes from him to me.
I opened my mouth to answer her, but Gabriel began tickling her, causing her to erupt with laugher once again. It was starting to get annoying.
“Okay guys, you can save it for the bedroom!” I teased playfully.
That got their attention.
Annabelle gasped, but Gabe just laughed. I rolled my eyes.
“So, what’s up?” Annabelle asked a second time, shooting Gabriel a look, as if to tell him not to touch her again.
“I can't believe we have to stay for an extra hour this entire week. That's a good five hours of my life wasted with school,” I groaned.
“It's an extra five hours I get to spend with her, through,” Gabe said, flinging an arm around Annabelle's shoulder. She smiled admiringly at him for a second.
Couldn't they just stop, already?
“It's so unfair! We didn't even do anything. They should just find the kids who did it, and leave the rest of us alone.” Annabelle said, turning back to me.
Gabe and I glanced at each other for a second. We didn't want Annabelle to notice, but we both were thinking the same thing. We were the ones who did it.
