I was climbing up my ladder trying to hang these god forsaken lights on the edges of my roof. My cousin Jay was supposed to be coming over to help but his dumb ass decided last minute to let me know he couldn't and me being the independent person I am decided to do it myself.
So here I am wobbling like a newborn deer, trying so hard not to fall. I loved decorating but Jesus Christ I couldn't stand hanging lights. "Fuck!" I curse aloud to myself. I fumbled over the cords, flustered and agitated.
My ladder began wobbling as I climbed higher trying to hang more lights. I'd stop and steady myself again before continuing. I wiped sweat from my brow. BANG! "SHIT!" I'd slipped off the ladder and fallen on my porch, I rolled over on my side, on top of someone who was groaning under me.
"Get off me!" He pushed me off and struggled to stand. I felt terrible now, those motherfucking Christmas lights. "The mail man brought me the wrong package." He pointed to the box he'd set in by my porch steps. His face was red, I wasn't sure if it was because he was angry or if it was from whatever injury he'd managed to attain. "Figured I'd bring it over to you."
"I am so sorry." I brushed snow off my coat and walked over. He backed up. "I can understand that." He was so attractive. He'd just moved in a month or so ago but I'd never actually laid eyes on him until now. Under a New York Giants beanie, I could see his hair was bleached on the ends, he had full lips and pretty white teeth that hid behind them. His eyes were set kind of close together and he had a dominant brow bone, with some really nicely shaped eyebrows. "I'm Renee, sorry to meet you like this." I held out my hand.
He grabbed it reluctantly, still mad I'm assuming. "Odell. It's fine, I guess it's not really your fault. No one expects people to fall out the sky on top of them everyday though." He smiled. It was as gorgeous as he was, I could feel my stomach twisting. "Although I'm not entirely sure why someone would be hanging Christmas lights on Christmas Eve, it's nice meeting you."
I laughed nervously, cheeks red with embarrassment. "Yeah, I was supposed to have some help doing this. I have some family and friends coming over for a party tonight, guess I wanted the outside to look as nice as it does inside."
"Oh, well I guess I'll see you around neighbor." He turned on his heels to walk off.
"Hey, I hope this isn't out of line, but I really need help with this...obviously. Could you?" I scrunched my face up waiting for him to curse me out.
"Yeah, I can do that. I've been pretty lonely anyway. Haven't really met anyone here yet."
"Well you can always come by tonight, it'll be really nice, might get to meet some of the other neighbors too if they come." I did this party every year, it was a thing well known on our block. "But I really appreciate this." I steadied the ladder as he climbed up. His was a pro at this. Plus, the view from down below was nice since he has a tight little ass.
He finished up the lights and came back down, "All done." He was so handsome, I couldn't stop myself from staring. "Is everything okay?" I shook my head.
"No, yeah. You're just really attractive." I spoke bluntly. There was no reason to hide it, I'm sure he knew.
He blushed. "Thank you. Not bad looking yourself." I smiled and pushed my hair behind my ear.
He kept my gaze a little longer before kicking around some snow, "So what time should I heard over later?"
"It starts at 7, but come anytime after, you know how CP time goes." We both had a hearty chuckle. "Matter fact, wanna come in? I can make us some hot chocolate, apple cider, your choice Odell."
"Yeah, I can do that." I led him inside and showed him to my couch. "I'll take some hot chocolate, with marshmallows please, if you don't mind."
I smiled and pulled out a bag of mini marshmallows and proceeded to make his cup. "So where are you from?"
"Louisiana." I peeked out of my kitchen to see him looking at some family photos I had on my fireplace.
"New Jersey is a pretty big jump." I speak softly as I hand him his glass. "What brings you this far?"
"Football, I was drafted to the New York Giants this year." It all made sense now. "Are you from here?"
"Nope, California. I came to the east coast for school and got better job offers over here so when I graduated I just stayed. Miss home from time to time, but I really enjoy everything over here."
Who'd of thought those damn Christmas lights would be the perfect wing man. Odell and I got to know each other a little longer before he left to go back home to get some rest before the party and to let me get the last minute things together. He was a really cool guy, goofy as all hell, but a huge starter, he had my house full of laughter and smiles. I was extremely pleased with the eye candy I'd have living next door to me.
