As the professor droned on about the correlations between ethnocentrism and it's part in cultural superiority I moped discreetly in my seat in the classroom. For the last 3 years I'd celebrated my birthday with my boyfriend Odell because for whatever uncanny reason, we shared it together.
It was no secret that I loved that boy with all my being so us being apart on such a special day stung a little. All my friends knew how hard I was taking him not being here so they had given me little gifts for my birthday, trying to get me to cheer up.
With my head on the desk, tuning out the lecture, I just imagined what I could be doing with Odell at this very moment. My eyes were shut when I heard the door open and shut, thinking nothing if it I kept my head on the desk until I heard Professor McPhilomy tell whoever I was in the back row of seats to the left. I glanced up to see a flower delivery guy carrying what had to be 2 dozen white and pink assortments of roses, lilies, and carnations. With a smile, the guy set them on my desk and walked out.
I could feel eyes burrowing into the side of my face while I read the card accompanied with my gift:
Naia, sorry I couldn't be there with you to celebrate. You know I would if I could. Hope you have a wonderful birthday baby, love you. Chin up love.

I beamed at the card and set the flowers in the seat next to me. Feeling a little uncomfortable, I hid my face again as I lay my head back down on my arms. 30 minutes into the continuation of the lecture, a knock came in the door and once again someone was stepping inside. I could hear hushed whispers as everyone talked around me. I was dead set on not looking up, praying maybe it wouldn't be me that the disruption was for again. It was. This time a UPS guy approached my desk, arms full of gifts wrapped in white and pink polka dot paper with frilly pink bows. I blushed and accepted the gifts. Only Odell would cause this much of a commotion getting gifts delivered to me, knowing I was in class.

After being humiliated through a ridiculous amount of gifts, I asked my roommate to help me bring everything in from my car. I had to admit, even if he wasn't here it was still turning out to be a pretty good birthday.
"You gotta good one." Octavia, my roommate, gushed. "All this work he out in, I'd bust it open on sight when I see him." She pushed herself off my doorframe and walked back to her room to continue studying for her midterm.
I couldn't help but agree it's her sentiment. Still walking on cloud nine, I called Odell to thank him and wish him happy birthday but the call went straight to voicemail. "Hey boo, I just wanted to call and thank you for embarrassing me today. It was really sweet. I love you an have a happy birthday. Don't let Juice get you too fucked up tonight, love you!" I made a few kissy noises into the phone and hung up.
Reading over some birthday cards from my other friends, I began to notice a low rapping noise coming from somewhere in my room. Knowing that I kept my bedroom door locked from the inside when I went to class, I was floored by the noise. I muted my TV and turned down the music I had playing from my speakers, trying to pinpoint the area it was coming from.
The noise seemed to me emitting from somewhere in my closet and when I opened the door it got louder. Scared out of my mind, I slowly reached for the light switch.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Odell jumped out of the closet making me jump back and fall on my ass. While my heart recovered from terror, I looked at him wrapped up in a huge pink bow that rested on his head.
"WHAT THE," I struggled to get back on my feet, "FUCK?!" I landed a punch to his stomach, making him cower and cover himself.
"Damn I thought I'd be a hug, a kiss, shit birthday sex. Instead I'm gettin abused!" His smile wrapped across his face as he engulfed me in a hug. "Happy birthday baby girl." He attacked me with kisses as we fell back into my bed.
"Well when you damn near made me have a heart attack, thinkin I gotta crazed killer in my closet you ain't getting nothing but some fists of fury." I smiled up at him as he hovered over me. "What are you even doing in town? Your supposed to be in Texas with the team."
"Game got cancelled, I didn't ask questions, just brought my ass home." From the second I found him, he hadn't stopped smiling and I wasn't complaining. "I see you got everything else." He glanced around my bedroom all the boxes and gift bags courtesy of him scattering the floor.
"Yeah, I almost got kicked out of class jackass." I rolled out of bed and grabbed up one of the smaller boxes. "What's this?"
"Open it." He retorted, typing something in his phone.
