Audrey, Corey and I scanned the cafeteria in search of an empty table for us to take a seat at. In the back near the entrance to the auditorium, I saw Chloe, a good friend of mine, smile in our direction and wave us over, indicating that we sit at her mostly empty table. Quickly, we made our way over there and took our seats.

"Hey Kara!" Chloe greeted, flashing a sweet smile. She hastily moved her paisley patterned book bag out of the seat next to her so that I could sit down.

"Hi Chloe. How's it going?" I asked.

"Uh, things are pretty good lately," she responded, pushing her black square rimmed glasses onto the bridge of her dainty nose, giving a small smile. The boy sitting to the left of her, whom I recognized as her boyfriend Ethan, pushed her dirty blonde hair out of her face, gently placing a kiss on her forehead. I understood this gesture of compassion from him, considering Chloe's father had been doing a lot of traveling, making things tough at home for her.

She was very lucky to end up with such an attractive guy like Ethan. His chiseled features made his face appear handsome, a face that could distract probably every girl that laid eyes on him. Ethan's deep green eyes held Chloe's gaze as he flashed a child like smile, attempting to reassure her. Anyone could clearly see the chemistry that these two had created.

"So, Audrey, when's the surgery?" Chloe asked gently.

"In a few days, and my nerves are really getting to me, ya know? Like I'm getting cold feet," Audrey responded nervously.

"Yeah, I totally get it," Chloe answered.

"But Kara, Tyler told me about the little date you two went on this weekend." Chloe raised her eyebrows at me as she nudged me with her elbow, showing interest in the topic.

"Oh God, how many people know?" I asked her.

"Just us, at least, that I'm aware of. Good job, by the way. Really hit a homerun with that one," Chloe said.

"Hey! I'm a home run too!" Ethan retorted, pouting at Chloe in disappointment.

"Of course you are, sweetie. But I'm just making sure Kara knows how lucky she is." She stated, lovingly pushing back his dark hair and smiling at him.

"Yeah, Kara, just letting you know, Tyler kinda sucks at the whole girl thing," Ethan warned.

"Really?" I questioned. "How so?"

"Tyler's only had a few girlfriends and he's fucked up with about everyone of them," Ethan claimed. "Plus, I think he's gay anyway."

"Ethan!" Chloe chastised. "Tyler is not gay. Just because he's in his little garage band doesn't mean that he's gay."

"It's not just that. It's the way he dresses in button up shirts all of the time and has a lot of friends that are girls," Ethan countered.

"No babe, that just makes him a stereotypical douchebag," Chloe stated in a tone that reminded me of a teacher telling a student right from wrong.

"And based upon this commonly formed opinion of Tyler, Kara, be careful with Tyler. That boy could break your heart as soon as you really start to fall for him."

"Warning taken into consideration," I noted. As the five of us carried on small conversations while we ate, I paid close attention to the differences between the two couples that surrounded me.

Audrey and Corey hadn't been together for as long as Chloe and Ethan had, but at times it really seemed like it. Corey would make stupid jokes and playfully mess with Audrey's golden curls or pull her ideally close and whisper a silly comment while listening to a conversation that was transpiring at that moment. He would constantly do whatever he could in his power to hear her laugh and make sure that she was happy.

Audrey always made sure that she was listening to him, no matter how dorky or serious he was acting at that moment in time. She intertwined her hands with his every chance that she got, making him aware that she was always his and that she wouldn't dare hurt him. They were a couple that contained consistent concern and compassion for each other.

Chloe and Ethan were a different story. Having been together for almost two years, they knew each other better than they knew themselves. Chloe would always say how lucky she truly was to have fallen in love with her best friend. To her, he was her world. She would stop wars for him if she had to. Ethan's life was total shit before he met her, and Chloe was what helped his world continue to turn. They never had to speak to express their affection for one another.

Chloe and Ethan could show their love through a single look or action. Around each other, they acted like mother and child. Ethan would act like a little kid and Chloe would act as if she was a parent that had to keep him in line. But in the end, they marched on as a whole, and even I could physically see that their bond was a force to be reckoned with.

Yet, here I was, sitting without a person to truly call mine. Even though Tyler and I had shared a kiss, we weren't official. But I don't need someone to call mine.

Surrounded by friends that always had my back, I realized that I needed to be focused on them right now. I didn't take the time to truly appreciate the most beautiful people in my life. Especially Audrey. She would need me over these next few days leading up to the surgery. I need to be her support.

While I sat there smiling to myself, lost in thought, I felt a hand come down on my shoulder. Swiftly turning my head and looking up to see who the hand belonged to, I grinned "Mind if I take a seat?" Tyler asked, a flirty look on his face.

Audrey shot up her eyebrow and gave me a funny look as she gingerly picked up her tray and sat down in the seat on the other side of Corey, allowing Tyler sit down next to me. "Hey, Tyler. What brings you over here?" I asked hastily.

"Ah, the boys were getting kinda boring so I thought I'd come talk to you instead," he responded.

"Yeah, like I'm any more interesting," I retaliated.

"Oh trust me, you are. With you there's always something new to learn," Tyler stated enticingly.

Ethan choked out between fake coughs, "Douche."

Chloe slapped him, attempting to get him to mind his own business. Tyler gave him a look of irritation, losing his cool demeanor.

He shot me a perfect grin, pursuing a continuation of conversation. We advanced into a form of flirtatious small talk as the lunch period
eventually came to a close.

All of us packed up our things and said our goodbyes as we headed off to our next classes. Audrey came up next to me, walking in long strides as she tried to keep up with my quickly moving yet short, stubby legs.

"Okay, I swear by all that is holy, if you don't keep me up to date on the whole Kara and Tyler situation while I'm stuck at home, I will strangle you as soon as it no longer hurts to move my arms," She lashed out joyfully.

Together, we broke out into laughter while passing other students through the crowded halls. I'm really going to miss this, I thought to myself.
