Escape

Elias lay in bed that night, his hands behind his head and a small smile on his face. Elisa was coming with him and Ignatius, and they had agreed to bring Emi along as well. They figured she deserved that, after being imprisoned for most of her life. Not to mention the fact she was practically family to them. Elias mulled things over in his head. They were going to start tonight, as soon as the midnight room check was over. They wouldn’t check even the halls again for another thirty minutes. That’s when they would make their escape. Suddenly the movement of air stopped and Elias froze. He slowly turned his head to see Aislin standing beside his bed. She was back in her hospital gown. Her hair was still as it always was, long and a complete rat’s nest, covering half of her face. Elias felt goose bumps spread down his arms and legs. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end. She just stood there, not saying a word. Her jade green eye seemed to chill his blood. Her face looked extremely pale and against her dark hair it reminded him of a horror movie he’d seen a commercial for on TV back home. He noticed a hospital bracelet on her wrist. When he tried to read it, Aislin hissed and her eyes went black. She lunged forward at him, her sharp nails aiming for his neck. Elias reared back, turning away from her to shield his eyes. He let out a horrified scream. In the instant he closed his eyes, she was gone and he felt the air flowing again. He shivered, his heart pounding against his chest. It was creepy; she seemed to change every time he saw her. Elias rubbed his eyes and glanced at the clock. He found that it was just a few minutes to midnight, so Elias lay down and mimicked the signals of someone who was asleep. Not too long after, Elias heard the door open to the boy’s dorm. He waited about a rough ten minutes after he heard the door shut before daring to get out of bed. He walked out into the hall and was followed closely by Ignatius who had been watching Elias, to see when he would leave. Ignatius and Elias snuck down the hallway until they could just barely see the guards. Elisa materialized next to them, met their gaze and disappeared again, this time with Elias and Ignatius in her bubble of invisibility. Everyone inside could see each other and the border, from the inside, was quite clear as it was a wavering translucent purplish color. Elisa, Emi, Elias, and Ignatius all walked straight past the guards and into the main entry hall. As they passed, Elisa slowed down so Emi could use her gift. She waved her hand and the guards crumpled to the ground, a few snoring. Once all the guards in sight were asleep, Elisa released her bubble and they all slipped out the front door. The next step was to get over the gigantic wall surrounding the place. There were guards patrolling the perimeter with guns made for long distance, like rifles. So, as long as they could get close to them without being detected, everything would go in their favor. Elias and the others crouched in the shadows as Elisa manipulated the atmosphere around them again. Ignatius took charge. “Okay, so everyone knows what to do, right?” he whispered. They nodded in confirmation. “And watch your step as we go, we don’t want to make too much noise. This bubble may be solid for most objects, but it will not stop a bullet. They move too fast,” Elisa added. Everyone nodded again. They began moving slowly across the courtyard to the large stone wall. Once they were hidden in the long dark shadows of midnight, Elisa released her bubble and they all flattened themselves against the wall. Elisa held her arms out by her sides and spun them in a circle. As she did so, in tune with her hands, it seemed as if the atmosphere was splitting until the thin lines met and a translucent purple circle rested on the ground below their feet. She then raised her hands up and the circle rose in the air, along the wall. Elias flexed the muscles in his hands and suddenly found them occupied by two dual daggers. He moved his dark bandana over his nose and looked over to Ignatius, who was readying himself. As the circle reached the top, a shout rang out across the silence of the night. “Escapees! Shoot to injure!”
