What if Johnny didn't kill Bob?

Darry's POV

Ponyboy looked broken. He didn't look peaceful, he looked hurt. He didn't look like he was asleep but he didn't look dead. Dead people looked peaceful. He was pale but not pale enough. There was no way my kid brother could be dead. We wouldn't be able to live without him.

It was my fault he was like this. I shouldn't have hit him I was so stupid. When Johnny asked if Ponyboy was alive I almost broke then.

"Darry what are we gonna do?" I look over at Soda's glossy eyes.

"I- we should probably take him to the hospital." I reply.

I take Ponyboy out of Soda's arms and I carry him to the truck. I look back and see Two-bit and Soda help Johnny walk to the car.

Soon we're all in the car and heading to the hospital. No one dares to say a word. The only sound in the car is Soda's sobs in the back seat. I can't help but keep thinking that this is my fault. I did this to everyone. In about ten minutes we arrive at the hospital.

Soda's POV

This time I carry Ponyboy into the hospital. Darry grabs the first nurse he sees and she gets Ponyboy a room right away.

"I'm going to have to ask you to stay here." She says then she leaves to the emergency wing.

We all sit in the seats. I put my head in my hands willing myself not to cry anymore but my mind keeps going back to Pony.

"What happend at the park Johnny?" Two-bit asks.

"Well Pony saw me at the lot. Then we ran to the park. We were just minding our own business until these big time socs pulled up. Ponyboy said something that got them mad. T-they started to drown him. I tried to help but they knocked me out." Johnny began to cry and Darry put his arm around him.

"It'll be alright little bud." After that we sat in silence.
