"What are we supposed to do with it?" Nelly heard the assistant whisper to the hairstylist in charge of doing her hair for the interview she would soon be doing.
She was being interviewed by the famous Katherine Saxton. She was notorious for preaching racist, Republican propaganda in favor of her own bigoted, misogynistic, Southern Baptist belief system, tearing down other ethnicities by only televising the worst of that population.
Hours after Nelly's accidental publication of her now trending poem, Katherine had one of her producers call Nelly's cellphone. Nelly didn't have a publicist nor had the news of her engagement to Preston been publicized, so the only form of contact was her email that was publicly shared on her blog site and her phone number which was not.
When she'd answered the call and realized it was Katherine's producer, she wondered how they'd obtained her private phone number, but the question of how her poem ended up on her blog website in the first place and how she'd even ended up in Washington D.C. engaged to the infamous Preston Phillips the third in the first place made her let it go. Anything can happen, she concluded.
When the formal introductions had been concluded and the question that arose–the necessity for the call in the first place–Nelly immediately answered with a blatant 'no', but was cut off by Samuel who ripped the phone from her hand and began to discuss a date and time.
"Do you not understand who just called you, little girl? That was Katherine Saxton. The Katherine Saxton and you were going to turn her down? This is just what we need for Preston's candidacy to be in our grips. You know this right?!" He practically screamed into her face as he smooshed her cheeks together with his palms on each side of her face.
"What I do know is that if you don't get your hands off my face, you won't have a person to go to that interview, little boy", Nelly mumbled through the flesh of her lips.
Samuel let go of her face with an indignant huff.
"Now, I know that this could help with Preston's candidacy, but I refuse to be interviewed by that KKK operator. I have been contacted before with the prospect of being interviewed by this maniac and I refused. Back then I was being paid a lot of money, why do you think that I will do it now, especially for people who have repeatedly degraded myself and my background?" She asked curiously, an eyebrow raised.
Preston decided now was as good a time as any to put in his two cents. "You said you would help me win. In your room earlier you said you would build me up, not destroy me, but by not doing this interview you will be destroying me and any chance I will have at the candidacy. You are a strong woman, Neslande. A strong woman with something to say and you are now associated with my name. The Phillips name. As my fiancé, do this for me," Preston pleaded genuinely, one knee on the floor and his hands gripping Nelly's.
Nelly gazed into his eyes. She knew he was only doing this to manipulate her into doing this stupid interview, but the longer she gazed into his eyes the faster her resolve was disintegrating.
