"Guess what I bought yesterday!" Timothy exclaimed, bouncing with excitement.
Gareth looked up from his exercise book, in which he was doodling soldiers fighting in an epic battle, and sighed, "What did you buy yesterday, Timmy?"
"Only the bestest and most awesome game ever in the history of the universe!!" shouted Timothy, rummaging through his school bag and pulling out a video game, before waving it in Gareth's face. "Last Quest Twenty-Four!"
"How can it be the last quest if there's twenty-four of them?" asked Gareth, confused.
"There just is! Want to come to my house and play it with me later? Well, watch me play... It's only single-player."
"Something tells me you're not going to take no for an answer," Gareth replied, continuing his drawing.
"You got that right!"
Later that day, when school had finished, the two friends made their way to Timothy's house. Shouting a 'hello' to Timothy's mother, the boys went straight upstairs and sat in front of Timothy's PlayStation. Inserting the game into the console, Timothy couldn't contain his excitement, squealing a little as he snatched up the controller. Gareth rolled his eyes and watched the screen as an animated sequence introduced the game's story.
Sparkling azure seas crashed against a cliff as the view panned upwards to show a silhouetted figure holding a humongous sword. Then the scene switched to a sword fight between two people, their faces just off screen. Suddenly, thescreen faded to show a young girl, walking alone through a meadow, before looking skywards. A huge beast flew from behind the clouds and landed next to her, allowing the girl to climb on its back.
"Wooooooow..." Timothy gasped in amazement.
"Yeah... Cool..." Gareth said with little enthusiasm. He prefered strategy games; commanding an army and waging war on the enemy kingdoms.
After the sequence had ended, a menu popped up and a charming melody played in the background. The options were New Game, Continue and Configuration. Timothy fiddled with the game configurations for a while before clicking back to the main menu and selecting New Game.
Enter Name, the game instructed. Timothy used the oscreen keyboard to type in his name.
Select Class, was the next command. The choices were warrior, rogue or mage. Timothy selected rogue. The next menu told the player to customize their appearance. Timothy's character wore black clothes with a hood, had blue hair and matching eyes, and wielded two daggers.
"How awesome do I look?" Timothy asked turning to Gareth.
"You don't look too bad," Gareth started, reaching for the controller, "But just let me-"
Timothy tried to pull the controller away just as Gareth got hold of it. At that moment, the TV screen glowed a brilliant white, filling the room with blinding light.
And suddenly, everything went black.
Gareth opened his eyes and looked around. He was sprawled out on a dirt path, running through a field. He sat up and turned his head to find a blue-haired boy, clothed in black, at his side.
"Hey, wake up!" Gareth shouted, shaking the stranger by the shoulder. The boy sat up and looked around, looking just as confused as Gareth felt.
"Where am I?" the boy asked, "Hey, you look familiar..."
"And you sound familiar... Timmy?"
"Huh? Gareth?! You're hair's white, dude! You look like a grandpa!" Timothy laughed.
"Where are we? And why do you look like the character you made?" Gareth asked, standing up in panic.
"Are we dreaming? No... Wait! This sort of happened in Last Quest Seventeen! A group of friend's got this big mysterious book from a second-hand bookstore and at night, they were transported into the book! Maybe we're inside the game!"
"Don't be stupid! We can't be inside a stupid video game! Can we? What's this big stick thing, anyway?"
"That," Timothy grinned, "would be your mage's staff..."
Soooooooooo... How was it? Bad? It was bad, wasn't it...?
I've just wanted to do a parody of RPGs for sooo long!
Granted, it's not that funny YET, but hopefully it soon will be!
Let me know what you think!
