Chapter One Part Two

Family Dinners are the epitome of horrific. Well, with the Daniels family they are. Especially when your two witch-like sisters arrive just for the cause, along with Mr. Perfect.

“Wednesday, can you please pass the carrots?” Riley asked me politely from where he was sitting next to me. In my head- my fist collided pleasantly with his face, but I grit my teeth together and nodded. My sisters rolled their eyes in sync, a thing most twins did, and sighed dramatically. One good thing about living in this house: it no longer included the twin witches. They were both living in Niagara Falls where they were attending Niagara University, which was (unfortunately) only an hour away from our house.

“So, Riley, how is school going this semester? Figured out where you want to go to college?” my dad asked Riley after taking a bite of his medium-rare steak. As usual my mom had cooked the meal to absolute perfection- or just the way my dad liked it. My mom always made sure she did everything perfect for dad, god only knows why. Maybe she thought it showed how much she loved him but I thought it made her look a tad bit pathetic.

“University of Toronto has already offered me a scholarship, sir. I was planning on accepting and heading up there for my schooling,” Riley said after wiping his mouth with the cloth napkin that now sat back on his lap. My eyes rolled as I looked down at my plate and pushed my carrots around.

“Wow, very good, Riley. Toronto is a very lovely city, in fact- Wednesday really loved it there and was planning on heading back up there for schooling as well. But, of course, she hasn’t been offered any scholarships, so we’ll have to see,” my mother pointed out. Everyone’s eyes turned to me and I could see the smug smiles forming on Anya and Freesia’s faces. They loved when our mom so casually pointed out what a disappointment I was.

“Yeah, not like she’s ever going to be offered anything,” Anya said. They both snickered and I bit my tongue, ready to lash out. But I knew that would only cause trouble for me.

“Girls!” My mother scolded, but yet, she didn’t correct them or defend me. My dad stayed silent too.

Although I had barely eaten any of my food, I pushed my chair out.

“May I please be excused? I’m not feeling so great,” I asked, glancing at my dad for approval. My dad seemed to care more about me then my mother did, so I made sure to ask him whenever I wanted anything.

He nodded simply and I quickly grabbed my plate and rushed into the kitchen, shoving it all into the garbage. I didn’t need to eat anyways. I was chubby as it already was. No need for any more excuses for the kids at school to bother me. They liked to push my buttons enough as it already was. I knew everyone was still staring at me and I cursed the open floor plan. My feet moved and pushed me into the first room that my family couldn’t see me from: the “family” room.

The “family” room was really just the TV room. We had a giant screen that came down from the ceiling and a projector that projected (whoa, weird) the image of the cable channels right onto the screen. Fancy, right? The downside to having such expensive equipment was that no one used it. The technology was too advanced for me to comprehend and my parents were never home. My mom worked for a fashion magazine and was always away on some type of trip or always home because that’s where she did most of her work when she wasn’t flying off to some fashion show. My dad, I wasn’t quite sure of what he did. He worked for some huge business company. He was home every day in time for dinner, but after dinner- you never saw him. He was off in his office, doing more work.
