A couple weeks later after work, I try and video chat Carter. For the first time since we moved he finally answered my calls.
"Hey, what's up?" he says. His eyes are slightly red and he's dressed like a spoiled rich kid.
"Just got off work. You?" I say.
"Getting ready for a party we're having here."
"I'm just curious, why haven't you been answering my calls?"
"I knew that was going to come up. Shit, um, baby, I love you and everything, but, I don't think this distance thing will work."
"What do you mean?"
"I'm saying, I can't handle this long distance relationship."
"If it's distance is the only thing, I can move. I'm waiting until next semester for my classes. This semester, I'll quit my job, move to Philly and then next semester we'll come back to Rochester. It'll work out, I know it will." I say trying not to cry.
"I know but it just won't work. Maybe after college we can try and get back together but before that I just can't do this distance thing. I love you and promise me you'll find someone just as good if not better than me. Okay?" Carter says before I log off from my computer.
I rest my head in my hands before reality hits. He's no longer mine after three years. How do you move on from two amazing years? You can't it's near impossible. Of all days he chose right before our anniversary. I feel like right now everything I've ever felt is just gone. I'm numb to the feeling of anything.
I then walk out of my room and walk to the kitchen. I grab a ton of junk food and sit on the couch. I grab the blanket off the back of the couch and wrap it around myself before turning on Netflix and watch How I Met Your Mother. Around midnight I fall asleep still crying though. I wake up in the middle of the night, I hear Peter walk into the apartment. I sit up and he sits next to me before giving me a hug.
"He broke up with me." I say.
"If it makes you feel any better, I found out Angie got a boyfriend." Peter says.
"I'm sorry."
He then gets up, goes to his room, comes back out a few minutes later with pajamas on and a blanket in hand. He sits on the opposite side of the couch as me before I fall asleep. When I wake up I realized what day it was. It was supposed to be our anniversary. Nice thing was I smelled bacon and eggs. I sat up, looked in the kitchen and saw some random person in the kitchen with a hoodie on. I get up, walk over to the random person and put my hand on their shoulder. They turn around and I find out it's Carter. I back up slowly before running into the island.
"You know I wouldn't break up right before our anniversary." he says before giving me a quick kiss. I then wrap my arms around him and rest my head on his chest.
"Don't ever do that again. I bawled my eyes out last night." I say before smacking his chest.
"Oh, I'm sorry, baby. But, you need to go look in your room. It looks like someone made a huge mess in your room. Probably stole somethings."
I walk out of the kitchen and straight to my room. Balloons, flowers. You name the sweet gesture, it's in my room.
I walk over to Carter and give him a quick kiss before punching his arm. "Next time don't scare me like that." I say smiling.
"I had to surprise you somehow." he says. I smack his chest playfully before kissing him. "Do you work today?"
"Yeah, I gotta get ready and leave soon." I say.
