Note// god bless America, but I hate fireworks. I found it hard to concentrate with all these gosh darn fireworks, but felt the need to update. So that's what I did, this chapter isnt its strongest, but that's because I didn't want to force everything I want to happen into this one chapter. Im working on keeping my pace good, because I have a tendency to rush stories. I hope you like this chapter comment & vote xx love you
nine: pray, do come and help me; the wolf is killing the sheep
I knew this man. He was a friend of Dad's and worked at the Bass & Pro shop where they sold gear to hunters and things of that nature. I'd never personally spoken to him, but just the very act of knowing him made my stomach churn. I didn't want to be a part of this. I didn't want him to die by Lyus, by both of us.
But I couldn't bear the thought of being an accomplice to murder.
Lyus proceeded closer to the man, who whistled innocently, clueless to his demise being merely seconds away. I could feel the ground slipping away as Lyus pounced into the air, going straight for the man's throat. The blood was a spark against my tongue and the very taste sent not only Lyus but me into frenzy. It was wrong, but something felt so normal about it and it scared me.
Lucy! Mason's voice was loud, but compared to the sound of Lyus' teeth snapping and the man screaming for help, I found it difficult on whom to pay attention to. I felt completely melted into the moment. I was there, I was killing this man. The thought made me angry - the feelings overwhelmed me completely. Flashes of red came before my eyes. Lucy! Mason called again. Within my frame a growl shook.
"Lucy!" Mason's voice was loud and harsh against my ear. I was now drawn into the real world with Mason holding onto my hand. I was shocked to look down and find nothing human about my hand. My arm had manifested into something thicker and harrier, my nails were longer and curved with a fine point, digging into the wood that made up the table, slowly clawing down. The only thing keeping me present, keeping me the slightest bit human was Mason's tight grip.
"Breathe." I bit back the taste of metal that slid against my tongue and closed my eyes tight, tying to reel in my emotions. I wasn't like Lyus. I wasn't a part of him.
The more I told myself that, the easier it became to come back into human thoughts and no longer a victim to pure animal instinct. A breath that I hadn't even realized I'd been holding in broke through clenched teeth. My muscles ached as they untensed and only then could I notice the intense and painful pressure from Mason's clutch on my wrist.
"What happened?" He slowly let go, leaving nothing but red finger marts against my skin. I was still shaken up and I found it hard to wrangle up my thoughts. What I'd just experienced was scary and terrifying but all I could really think about was the man, the man that Lyus had killed. From the corner of my eyes, I could see students going about their business normally, oblivious to the very happenings between Mason and me. My body was tired and achy all over; I could feel the sweat against my neck, causing a shiver to travel down my spine with each blow of the wind.
"Lyus," I managed to mumble. "I saw - he killed someone." It was hard to let the words come out and I found it completely difficult to confirm the terror that Id witnessed. "A man," I continued on.
"Where?" I looked up to find Mason's hand a tight balled fist, his jaw tensed and lips pursed tightly.
"In town, nowhere near here." That didn't make me feel better and I knew it wouldn't make Mason feel better. If anything, this only made me feel worse. The situation was very real now. Lyus was a monster, a monster that had no urge but to kill and have control over the area. Playing back the attack in my head, I could now understand why Mason wasn't exactly a hundred percent behind me tying to take Lyus down. Would we really be a match for a beast like him?
The whole day I found it hard to concentrate on lessons. My mind kept going back to what'd happened. I couldn't stop staring at my arm. It was smooth, thin and pale. My nails were round, not very long and clean. Yet when I closed my eyes I couldn't help but picture my arm in the form it'd been earlier. I could vividly picture the claw print my nails left from digging into the table top.
News of the attack hit by the end of the school day. That man, Garieth Gills, had a daughter who attended Crescent Falls High. I'd never known her, but she sat in front of me in history. Knowing that I'd witnessed her father being killed made me feel horrible. Mason waited outside with me as I waited for my Mom to come and pick me up. Things were a bit more hectic seeing how some parents who worried about the attack had come to pick up their children. everything was just like it'd been when I had been attacked. Except this time I felt like people had a reason to panic.
"It's not your fault Lucy," Mason said as if he'd known what I'd been thinking. I wish I could've stopped Lyus. He had all this control over me and there was absolutely nothing I could do to keep him from killing Garieth.
"What if he kills again and I lash out at home? Who is going to stop me from turning into that? Who is going to stop me from harming my parents?" Mason started to say something when I heard my Mom calling my name. She was walking for us. I hadn't even notice her pull up.
"I tried calling," she said as she came closer. I was sure my phone was dead, after everything that happened last night charging it wasn't really on my mind.
"Sorry, it's dead."
"Oh, well that's got to change. Does your friend need a ride? I just want to thank you again for bringing Lucy home. I'm sure you kids have heard about the wolf that attacked that man. There have been a lot of wolf sightings lately."
"I'll be fine Mrs. Lysonburg," Mason said with surprise ease. "I just wanted to make sure she got home safely this time." Mason grabbed his bag and before leaving gave me a look that screamed don't worry. It was easier said than done.
"Alright then. Come on, lets get home." I followed Mom to the car, trying to spot Mason in the crowd, but he was gone and there wasn't any sight of Chandler or Alexandria. I wondered if they were already out there, combing the woods for Lyus and his pack.
I went to sleep early, or at least I asked to be excused early. Truly, I couldn't fathom the idea of swallowing anything or trusting my stomach to digest much. I could hear the tv Dad watched from down the hall. He was watching the news. Garieth's body had been found by a ranger who had received a call about a couple of wolves. I wanted to shut it all out, but even with my eyes closed and the covers drawn tight over my head, I couldn't get the image out. I couldn't stop the thoughts.
Struggling to stay preoccupied, I got out of bed and started for my desk to fumble around on the internet. I'd only glanced out of my window but could see the shadow that hat stood out against the white snow. Furrowing my brow, I moved closer to my window. Between the spaces in the trees I could see the shadow coming closer. Rubbing at my eyes I looked back out the window to find the shadow gone. But I knew what I saw. Lyus was out there and he was waiting.
