"You should congratulate your bhabhi." Karthik told me later that night.
"What is it bhai?"
"She is coming back. You won't have to live alone." He said and continued, "I am leaving the two of them in your care."
"That is great news bhai. I am glad I'll have company. Wait, two of them, is she pregnant?"
He nodded. I was very happy for the two of them. Gunjan loved kids. In fact, she was the one who helped me with my Rishi in the beginning.
"Thank you Karthik. Thank you for looking out for me. Thank you for trusting me enough to leave them here."
"Are you kidding me Kavya? I wouldn't have it any other way."
Gunjan was here the next week and she was working from home most of the time. I felt like I needed to take a few days off and so I decided to ask Gaurav about it.
"Hey Kavya, take a seat." He said pointing to the chairs as I entered his cabin.
"Thank you."
"So, do you need help with something?"
"Yeah, actually I wanted to ask, is it okay for me to take a week or two's leave?"
"Leave? Two weeks? That is a long time Kavya."
"I know, but it is a family emergency."
"Okay then. What about the cases?"
"About that, I'll talk to Ashita about most of them. I'll need you to take care of Mr. Singal's case, it is a complicated one."
"That is a pretty hard one you are leaving me with."
"It is you, I am sure you'll manage."
Gaurav was there with me when Mr. Singal had approached us. He knew the whole case very well and since it was a high profile case, I had not wanted to represent it in the first place. Not that I lacked the confidence, but I didn't want to be in the limelight.
Spending time with Gunjan helped me forget about the problems in my life. I had tried not to think about the fact that I had heard my ex-neighbour saying Amit realised leaving me was a mistake. It was hard not to think about it when she visited me at my house along with her husband a few days after the party. They talked about how things had changed after I left. It was as if they would not take the hint that I was not interested in talking about my past.
I was not in a mood to talk after they left. Gunjan understood completely and didn't intrude my privacy. I took my painting kit out that day. I just painted not bothering were it was headed. It took me a while before I realised I had drawn a little boy who was surrounded by darkness. From there, as the painting progressed, there was light. It was as if after all that had happened he had found peace. Painting that calmed me and I had forgotten about Amit wanting me back.
The two weeks with Gunjan passed in a blur. Having someone to take care of, after a long while, was nice. I enjoyed making breakfast for her. I was glad that I had her when I wanted someone to open up with. She understood me completely and it felt good.
It was my last day off. Ashita had updated me on the statuses of the cases she had represented for me. I was watching TV with Gunjan when my phone rang.
"You are coming back tomorrow, aren't you?" Gaurav was the one on the other end.
"Yes Gaurav, I am definitely coming back tomorrow.
"Good, I could use the help. We have a few new cases that need your attention."
"I will look into them first thing tomorrow."
"Should I pick you up in the morning tomorrow?"
"Oh no, it is fine. I have my car."
"Okay then, see you tomorrow."
"Bye."
Gunjan was curious to know who the caller was.
"It was my boss; he was making sure I was coming back."
"Really, you think?"
"Yeah." I said.
"Does he call each and every employee of his to make sure they are coming back from a vacation?"
"I am sure he does."
"You are really naive Kavya, you know that? Karthik did tell me about meeting this boss of yours." She was talking as if she was sure there was more to it.
"I bet he did. But believe me, there is nothing to talk about in that."
"You don't get it Kavya. Karthik did notice the way he was looking at you that day. He said it looked as if he was in love."
"Don't be stupid bhabhi; there is no way that he is in love with me."
"Come on girl, not very boss miss their employees and makes sure they are coming back."
"He did that only because he doesn't like representing family court cases. He wants me to get back so that he doesn't have to endure the drama."
"And can you please explain to me why he wanted to give you a ride?"
"I don't know."
"Yeah, that is what I was talking about."
"No Gunjan, that doesn't make any sense. How can he love me? He doesn't even know me."
"Well, that is exactly what love is. It does not make sense most of them time. It is ineffable."
"You are complicating things Gunjan; I don't want any more complications in my life. I am good with the way the things are now."
No one would understand. Neha and Maya had also called me during my off days saying Gaurav missed me. I rubbished their statements saying they were just making fun of me. Were they? Could they be right? How could a person who barely knew me be in love with me?
I decided not to think about it. I had adjusted well to my life after it had turned upside down. Now everything was getting complicated again. My boss apparently loves me and my ex-husband probably wants me back. When did things get so complicated?
