"So, did you enjoy the night?" Gaurav asked me while we were in his car.
"Yes, I very well did."
"If you don't mind me asking, what is your favourite part in a wedding?"
I was shocked for a second when he asked that, but I soon realised that question didn't affect me as much as it would have a few months ago.
"Probably the food." I said after thinking for a while. He laughed at my response. This was the first time I had heard him laugh. He was a person who did smile a lot, but laughing was different. He looked more attractive doing that.
'What all are you thinking Kavya? You don't want to be there. He might have feelings for you, but you don't reciprocate the feeling. After all, he is still your boss.' I said to myself.
"You look beautiful tonight." He said breaking my chain of thoughts.
"You already said that."
"Oh, I mean it."
"Thank you Gaurave shHHHHHHHHHHHHKKDEDEC."
We rode in silence for a while after that.
"Oh no, I don't believe this." He said.
"What is wrong?"
"How stupid can I be? I am running out of gas." He said pointing to the fuel tank. He found a parking spot nearby and stopped the vehicle.
"I am really sorry Kavya."
"It is okay Gaurav, how could you have known?"
"I could've Kavya. All I needed to do was glance at it before I ran out."
"It is alright. We could always call a cab." I said.
"Yep, we can do that." He said taking out his phone to open the app.
"Did you get one?" I asked him after about two minutes.
"The nearest one is thirty minutes away. Should I call him?"
Thirty minutes was way too long. It was only a twenty minute walk from here to my place. Maybe we could go there and I could offer him my car to drive home.
"Kavya?" He patted my shoulder to gain my attention.
"Yeah."
"What should I do?"
"If you are okay with it, we can walk to my place?"
"Fine with me. I love romantic walks during the night." I stopped in my track.
"I didn't mean, shit... sorry Kavya....what I meant was, the movies... I love watching them in the movies... well I did not mean this was one... I wanted to say..." He was trying his best to cover up his mistake.
I decided to go easy on him. I smiled at him and said "I know you didn't mean that." Well, I did know he meant exactly that. He was slipping up quite a lot these days.
"How much time does it take from here?" He asked changing the topic.
"Roughly around twenty minutes."
"Oh okay. So, shall we make this walk interesting?"
"What exactly do you have in mind?" I asked him playing along.
"Tell me something about you, I'll tell you something about me." He said casually. So this was his way of trying to get to know each other better.
"Doesn't seem like fun to me." I said in all honesty.
"It will be, here, I'll start. I used to be in the college football team."
"Okay, I used to be in the college debate team."
"I knew that."
"No you didn't." I argued.
"Yes I did. It was in your resume. I also know you like to cook and paint. I know you have a brother and a sister in law. So don't bring those up. Now tell me something else."
"Okay..." I thought for a while and said "I was born on a Sunday."
"Me too Kavya, what are the chances." He said sounding excited. It was funny to watch my boss behave like a kid.
"One in seventh."
"Don't bring in logic lady, we are having fun here."
"Talk for yourself mister." I said returning the sarcasm.
I heard a thunder strike somewhere in the background.
"Did you hear that?" he asked me.
"Yep."
"Now tell me you are afraid of thunder and lightning."
"Sorry, but no."
"You should've been. Then I would've got..." I didn't want him to finish the sentence he was saying if he was going to say anything along the lines of what I was thinking. I guess luck was on my side, it started raining heavily.
He took my hand and pulled me with him to the nearby shop. The lights were out since they were closed. I could feel his eyes on me. My clothes were sticking to me like a second skin and I felt awkward standing so close to him. I guess he sensed my uneasiness because he left my hand and took a step away from me.
"So much for having fun; all it took was a few seconds t soak us." He said and I nodded.
"Here," he said handing over his blazer to me, "take this."
"Thanks but I am okay."
"I am not offering this to you because you are cold. I know why you are finding it difficult to look me in the eye. So, take this."
"Thanks." I said taking the blue blazer from him and putting it on.
The rain stopped after a good ten minutes.
We came out from the safety of the room and started walking to my house.
I unlocked the doors and left him in the living room as I went to my brother's room to get him a change of clothes. I showed him to the guest room before going to my room to get changed.
I returned in five minutes to see him in the living room still in his old clothes.
"You didn't change."
"Yeah, I'll be fine till I get home."
"But..."
"No Kavya, I saw a few of your neighbours' lights on. I don't want to cause trouble for you by giving them the wrong idea. We both know what they could possibly say."
I hadn't even thought about that, but, I was glad he did. He was right, my neighbours could be bothersome.
"So, the keys?" He asked.
I handed him my car keys and he promised to pick me up in the morning.
I didn't get to see Maya much in the morning. We were both busy with our work. It was when Neha came demanding to our cabin why we weren't at the cafeteria that we were already past lunchtime.
"Haven't you both taken a break yet?" Gaurav asked coming in.
"Nah, I was just working on the Sharma case. I was thinking of asking him to come over tomorrow to read and sign the petition." I said.
"That is good. But, I still want the two of you working for me. So I don't want you two starving, go get some lunch."
The two of us joined Neha at the cafeteria. They asked me about my ride with Gaurav and I told them what happened.
"So, you basically had a romantic walk, played twenty questions and had a moment in the rain." Neha said.
"How did you get all that from what I said?"
"Oh, I completely agree with her. You so like him Kavya." Maya pointed out
And, the thing is, she was right.
