Chapter 1

Father leads us to a grouping of trees, as the sun begins to set and the moon is beginning to appear in the distance. I get off of Berkley and sit down on a stump watching father grab stuff from the saddle bag, he pulls out a canteen a few apples. I stand up "Father I am going to gather wood for a fire" I say walking into the woods. I pick up some thick wood from the ground, all of a sudden I hear a sound of a twig snapping behind me. I stand up turning around looking into a bush.

"Who's there?" I say. All of a sudden I am grabbed from behind and the twigs and wood drop to the ground. I scream loudly frightened. I jump trying to get away from the strong arms that hold me still.

    "Please let me go" I cry out. I kick hard against the body against me. My long black hair gets caught in something around his waist I scream louder trying to get away. I am dragged through the woods. I am thrown to the ground, my face landing into a mud pile.

"Why are you doing this? Please let me go" I cry out.

    I look up the person's eyes are blood piercing they're as clear as water, the hair sticks up like a mohawk. "Chief come and talk you, he is furious" he says.

" I am just a girl please don't hurt me anymore I am scared" I cry. He leaves and a tall thin man comes in and stares at me looking me over.

" I Chief Tandal you come in my territory and you white and try to take me land" he says.

"I am sorry people trying to take your land but my father and I are only trying to find a place to live. We aren't like them we grow plants and heal injured animals" I say as tears roll down my cheeks, they taste like salt.

"You not stop, now you are here for good" he says. I try to pull myself against a post, my tears still flowing.

"I want to leave please don't do this, you're gentle human beings aren't you?" I say.

"You not come here at all you are going to die here" he shouts. Some Indians come in and pull me roughly at my arms pulling me to a standing position.

"Bring her to Misela she will do as she pleases with her now" he shouts leaving. "Please don't do this" I cry out. They drag me roughly out of the room and push me down to the ground. I look up at a thin elderly lady smiling at me.

"You are a beauty, now you're mine to deal with" she says. "Please don't hurt me I will do anything. I am not betrothed yet. I will marry someone to protect you please" I cry out.

"Betrothed? What does that mean?" she says.

"It means marry please don't harm me" I cry out loudly. She stops in her tracks and talks to a young boy in some strange language. He leaves and a few minutes later the Chief comes back. He comes toward me grabbing some of my hair and rubbing it between his fingers. He stares into my baby blue eyes. He smiles and nods at Misela. I look at him frightened as he gently places a finger to my face. I shudder at his touch closing my eyes.

"You be mine" he says, he looks at Misela smiling.

"Chief white men be coming close they search for girl we must move sir" a young boy says. The chief stands and says "we show no mercy come young boys we must show them we mean business" he says pulling me up right dragging me behind him. We stop about 25 miles south of the camp I believe. He lets go of me having his young boys hold me still.

"White men, I Chief Tandal you come on my territory to make us leave. We have white girl and we keep her now" he shouts. I see father on the back of Berkeley.

" You kidnap my only daughter and you expect us to leave when you hurt one of our blessed woman" father says.

"Speak child, have we harmed you" Chief says staring at me angrily.
