Chapter 4
The people stared at us, their facial expression showing no remorse, no regret. Tandal goes over to them crouching down to look right into their eyes. "Why you here?" Tandal says. They ignore his question still keeping their same expression on their face. Tandal gets closer into their face getting furious as he takes a clump on one of their hair in his hand yanking it. The person lets out a loud scream that pierced my ears. I close my eyes as Tandal yanks harder.
"We here cause Chief Minderl say you took something that belong to him" one of them say whispering as Tandal releases the others hair.
"You come take something we no have" Tandal says standing up looking at everyone. I look at both of the people looking into their eyes. One of them has light brown hair with blue eyes and the other has black hair with eyes of ice. Tandal looks at them furiously. I step forward placing a hand on Tandal gently having him move toward everyone else as I step toward them sitting myself onto the ground in front of them.
"You may not expect this but we haven't stolen anything from you. We are innocent in all things you believe we've done we have we don't want you harmed we want to be free from bloody future wars and battles" I say looking at the two of them. They look up and I can see the fear in their eyes, and that's when I know they had no choice.
"We no choice we forced or our families be killed in front us" they say.
"No harm come to your family we will bring them here but you will stay tied up until we feel you are no harm to us" I say. They look at me worried and concerned. I turn and face Tandal who seems very furious at my decision but slowly his expression changes to a huge smile that shows he approves of my decision. I walk past everyone going to find my father who is standing by a nearby tree looking at me.
"You really care about these people" father says.
"If I was to not care that would get me nowhere in life, I have to take charge and save lives not take them away from those who deserve their life" I say. I look into father's eyes seeing approval in them.
"I can't be like the others it pains me when others get threatened to have there family taken from them just to get there own revenge. I will not let these innocent people get hurt for souly no reason" I say. Tandal comes over to father and I nodding toward us. I look at him for approval of my decision.
"You no mean no harm save family I send men help you get them" Tandal says looking at me. I nod looking at him turning away and heading back towards the chief tipi. I go inside seeing Maria wrapping Chameli into a blanket she made out of cloth. I look at her thinking about how all the other Indians have been wrapping their infants when I realize they use animal skin not cloth.
"Maria stop, Indians wrap their infants differently than how we do it" I say Maria stops staring at me. I take Chameli grabbing calfskin placing it onto the ground I lay her onto the skin.
"We wrap indian infants in calfskin because it shows respect and honor for them. I will do the same for this little angel" I say wrapping her up kissing her soft head. I lay her down into her basket sitting Maria telling her all about the things I've noticed with the indians. Tandal comes inside the tipi carrying a piece of pink cloth smiling at me.
"Wrap Chameli this" he says putting it towards me. I look at it noticing that it's the pink baby blanket mother made me. I take it from him nodding.
"She's wrapped in calfskin I wanted to show you I take your'e culture serious" I say. He smiles at me sitting in front of me looking at Chameli.
"She pretty, share culture" he says. He grabs the pink blanket and places it next to Chameli.
"Come me I show something" Tandal says as Maria picks screaming Chameli and nods caring to the baby. Tandal walks out of the tipi and goes toward a small path in the woods. I follow him into the depth of the woods he stops at a small green area with colorful flowers.
