(Kid's POV)
My eyes slowly opened, and the first thing I saw was my friend Soul standing over me, talking to my partners. Their voices were muffled through the pounding in my head, which slowly calmed as I came to.
Soul looked down at me, "Oh, look who's awake. Hey, Kid." He offered me a hand to help me up, which I ignored, getting up on my own. He awkwardly lowered his hand, and I glanced around at their faces with a confused expression on mine.
"What happened?" I asked sternly. "Where's Alexus, is she okay?"
Soul just pointed over his shoulder with his thumb, not even bothering to say anything.
I walked over to Alexus, her body slumped over Duff's body; she's probably crying. "Alexus?" she didn't answer me. "I know you're sad about your sister..." I awkwardly tried to console her. "...But we need to get you some help and-... Alexus?" She still wasn't responding. "A-Alexus?!" Everyone looked in my direction as I became frantic.
I lifted her shoulders up so I could see her face; her eyes were closed and her skin was pale, almost white. My body went cold and I felt my heart drop. I only just noticed the stab wounds on her stomache and chest.
"Maka! We need to get her back to the academy, NOW!!" I frantically summoned Beezlebub and scooped Alexus's unconscious body into my arms. "I'll meet you guys back at Father's school!" I sped off through the pitch black night sky, panicked and tears escaping my eyes.
I looked down at Alexus, and another wave of sadness rushed through me, along with more tears. "I'll get you help... it'll be okay..." I looked up to see the faint glow of Death City on the horizon. As soon as I reached the DWMA, I stepped foot on the ground and hit a full sprint toward the infirmary. Once within ear-shot, I called out for Professor Stein, yelling his name. "Alexus is hurt!!"
He was waiting outside of the infirmary by the time I reached the door, and he took Alexus from my arms to set her on a table for operation.
"Can you help her?" I asked, trying to stay calm.
"I'll see what I can do." He answered smoothly and calmly while he prepared the room.
"What about her ears?" My gaze locked onto the wound where a fox ear used to be.
He picked up a needle with a milky, cloudy liquid swirling around in it. "I'll figure that out later; her other wounds are the priority right now, they are more serious than they look." He blandly stated exactly what I didn't want to hear.
This was more than I could handle. Before I could breakdown in tears, I quickly excused myself and stepped out of the room to wait.
I shut the door and leaned my back against the wall, sliding down until I was sitting.
The tears came in waves; right when I thought I couldn't cry anymore, I would cry again. It went on like that until I finally fell asleep, drained of energy, emotion, and - most of all - drained of tears."Kid," a distant voice called to me. "Kid, wake up."
I opened my tear-crusted eyes, my body achy from yesterday's fight... or maybe it was just because I slept on the school's cold, hard floors for a night. Stein stood over me, his face serious.
I drowsily sat up, my mind still half asleep. I looked to my right to see Crona leaning against the wall on the other side of the wall. Red rims around his eyes told me he had been crying at some point too...
I looked back up at Stein, half scared at what he was about to say.
"Well..." he began, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Her wounds were quite serious, but with enough rest, she should be okay..."
I felt my heart jump inside my chest. 'She's okay... She's going to be okay,' I repeated to myself, a smile growing on my face.
"...but she doesn't want to see you right now."
Aaaaaaaaand the happiness is gone.
"W-what?" is all I had to say. I felt the tears coming again, and the sore lump in my throat.(Meanwhile~~ in the operation room; Alexus' POV)
Maka leaned in by my bedside; being one of my closest friends, she's all I trusted at a moment like this. Tears escaped my eyes. Not beacause of the pain. The pain was the last thing on my mind. Stein - that crazy bastard - had given me enough anesthetic to numb a horse. The tears came from a - in my perspective - much, much bigger problem.
"I don't want him to see me like this..." I pleaded to Maka. "I-I can't.... what if he overreacts?!" I became frantic.
She softly patted my hand. "It's gonna be fine; and - you know Kid. He ALWAYS overreacts." She rolled her eyes and I couldn't help but laugh. Of course she was right.
My laughter trailed away and I stared at my hands, bandaged in blood-stained gauze. I heaved a sigh, the tightness in my chest restricting my breath.
"Hey..." she whispered. "Kid loves you, and I know that for a fact. I've seen the way he looks at you... haven't you noticed it?"
I stared at her blankly.
She half-chuckled once. "I guess not. I knew him before you, and since he's met you, I've never seen him so... attatched."
I looked back down at my hands, blushing like a little girl. A slight smile grew on my face.
Maka stood, her green eyes looked caring and understanding. "Well, I'd better be going. Do you need anything?"
I didn't look up when I answered. "Yeah... could you send Kid in now? I... I really want to see him..." My face turned a shade darker, and I braced for what was to come.
"Of course," she tossed a knowing smile my way. She reached the door and rested her hand on the knob before turning to me once more. "Oh... and, Alexus? How does it, you know, feel?"
I knew what she was talking about, and I tried my best to smile. "Different, I guess. It's gonna take a while to get used to, but I think I'll grow to like it."
She silently nodded and walked out the door.(back in the corridor, Kid's POV)
The door to Alexus' room slowly opened, revealing Maka.
'Oh,' I thought sourly, still sad, angry, and scared somehow all at once. 'So Alexus allowed her in, but not her boyfriend?' A vein popped up on my forehead.
For a moment there, I began to doubt what that word even meant. "Boyfriend", "girlfriend". What's so special about that title? Nothing changes... everything simply still... is.
During my mental debate, Maka walked up and whispered unintelligible words into Dr. Stein's ear, then walked off, inviting Crona to follow her.
Dr. Stein inturrupted my mental fuming when he rested a hand on my shoulder. "She'll see you now," he informed me.
At once, all my anger and confusion dissolved like snowflakes in an ocean.
My mind went blank, and I numbly nodded. My feet dragged me to the door, and I slowly opened it, as if waiting for something to explode.
"Hey, Kid..." a familiar, but unusually nervous, voice floated to my ears from inside.
