Chapter 29 - Keeping Secrets

"Paul?!"

Mairead and I stood with our jaws hanging, as we stared at the figure standing in front of us. I had so many questions running through my mind, and I'm sure Mairead was the same. The main one, was if Paul was here, where were the boys?

"Hi girls, I'm sorry to frighten you." Paul chuckled, opening his arms wide.

Grinning, we stepped into the embrace. "It's good to see you Paul." I sighed into his shoulder.

"You too." He said.

We pulled away, and I looked behind him. "So, where are the boys? Why are you here? What about the tour?"

Paul let out a booming laugh. "Questions! Questions!"

My mum - who I hadn't payed attention to till this moment - spoke. "How about we take this into the living room. Erin, you lead the way. I'll get everyone tea and a bite to eat. Milk and sugar, Paul?"

I led the two into the living room. Although Mairead practically lived here, so I only led one. I closed the door behind Paul, and sat down on the couch. Mairead sat beside me, and Paul sat opposite us, beside an empy space where mum would sit.

"So, Paul. Are you going to answer our questions then? Let our questioning minds rest?" Mairead asked.

Paul chuckled and lightly shook his head. "I don't think I should..."

"What? Why?" I pouted.

"Everything will be clear soon, don't you worry." He smiled.

"But how soon?" Mairead argued.

"I can't tell you that either!" Paul laughed.

"We can't wait!" I whined.

"Well I guess you'll have to won't you. Anyway, it's nice to see you too girls!"

I rolled my eyes, just as the door opened and my mum walked in. She had a tray with two mugs of tea, and a small plate of digestive buscuits. She shut the door a bit too forcefully, and went to sit down beside Paul. I kept my eyes on him as he thanked mum, and took the mug and a buscuit.

I can't believe that Paul Higgins is here in my house, drinking tea and chatting to my mum like they're old friends. One Direction's manager. Life really is full of surprises.

I huffed and slouched back into the couch. I stared up at the ceiling, blocking out the sounds of mum, Mairead and Paul talking about who knows what. I was still confused. My puzzled mind wouldn't leave me be. I still had no idea why Paul was here.

Out of the corner of my eye, I looked at my mother. She didn't look confused in anyway. She either knew why he was here, or didn't care. We hardly ever got guests. She was the sort of person who loved to show off her home and make guests feel welcome.

But from the way the two looked at each other as they spoke, with a familiar glint in their eyes, I guessed she knew why he was here. Which only made me more curious than ever.

"I'm just going to pop to the loo." I announced.

Of course I didn't actually need the toilet. I just wanted to get out of the room to "investigate".

My mum waved me off, not even looking my way. She was too busy talking to Paul. I rolled my eyes as I made my way to the door. Typical mum. Flirting with any middle-aged man that set foot in our house.

I slammed the door shut, earning a shout from my mother. I ignored her and walked down the hallway towards the front door. I needed fresh air to clear my head. Paul was reminding me too much of Niall, which was causing me to over think things. And when I over think, I get easily stressed.
