Chapter 4
"What?" I whispered, horrified.
Talia's face contorted with pain, "No time to explain. You have to come. Now."
We both broke into a sprint, as Talia led the way to Meera's room. Bursting through the door, we came to a halt. Meera was thrashing in her bed, sheets tangled around her heated body. Rico whipped his head to us, and I could see the panicked state he was in.
"I-I don't..." he stuttered, shoving his hands in his hair.
"Shhh, Rico, come with me," Talia soothed, taking Rico by the arm, leading him away from the room.
We made eye contact on her way out and she nodded her head, once. I closed the door after them and rushed to Meera's side. Taking her hand in mine, I was shocked to find it was blazing hot.
"Shhh, Meera, I'm here," I whispered, tucking her disheveled brown hair behind her ear. She moaned in agony, gripping the sheets with her free hand, making her knuckles turn white.
I dampened a cloth in a bowl of cold water next to her bed, and placed it on her forehead. She whimpered, as a tear rolled down her cheek.
My insides constricted and I was about to cry myself, when the door to her room flew open and there stood Caleb and the boy that attacked me. His hands were tied behind his back, and Caleb was holding onto his arm.
"What is this?" I asked, standing up.
"He's here to help, Mar," Caleb answered, entering the little room with him.
"What can he possibly do?" I asked, "Meera is dying," I whispered and walked back to her bed, kneeling next to her, and took her hand.
"How do you know she is dying?"
I whipped my head to the boy who just spoke. His tousled, jet-black hair was falling on his eyes, but he didn't bother brushing it away.
"Talia said so," I spat.
"No need to be so rude," he bit back.
"Give me one reason why I shouldn't just murder you on the spot," I growled, getting up.
