It was a full moon tonight, the circle creating enough light for me see where I was walking. Not that I didn't know.
I could just see his shadowy figure, but I knew it was him when my heart and my mind jumped. He actually came!
I ran silently over to where he was hiding. I whinnied softly in greeting.
"I'm really sorry about yesterday." I said.
He flicked his tail, but said nothing.
As Lead Mare, I've learned that if you want someone to talk you have to be quiet. They'll get uncomfortable and try to fill the silence. So that's what I did-I stayed quiet.
It gave me time to take in his appearance. He was a liver chestnut, it was a pretty cool, especially with the little blaze stamping his snout. He wasn't bulky like the other horses I had seen, but he did have the feathery legs like them. His mane was clipped short and his tail was tied up. He was taller than me, but not by much.
He just looked so different, unlike any horse I had ever seen. Then again, I hadn't seen many other horses. All unicorns are naturally white colored. We don't have blazes or stars or any marks on us, unless we aren't purebred which is very unlikely. His uniqueness scared me, but it also excited me.
"What's wrong?" He must have noticed I was staring at him.
"I don't know, its just that you're diff-no, new to me. See, all unicorns are shades of white unless they aren't purebred, which is nearly impossible. If it wasn't purebred they would rarely be unicorn, they'd simply be part 'white horse'." I explained.
"So white horses really do exist?" he said.
"What's your name?" I asked, changing the subject.
"They call me Jax. Yours?"
"Lunaria."
"Well it's nice to finally talk to you up close, Lunaria." he said. I liked it when he said my name.
What am I thinking?! I can't possibly have feelings for this horse, can I?
"What's it like?" I asked suddenly.
"What's what like?"
"The human camp." I said.
"Big. With a lot of other horses and humans." he replied.
"What are they planning on doing?"
"Well they'll probably use the trees for firewood. Maybe to make houses." I looked into his eyes, they reminded me of all of the colors of the woods, but mixed together. But to me they also looked guilty. But what could he be guilty of? Maybe it was cutting down the forest, but that wasn't his fault it was the human's.
"What's the matter?" I asked.
"Nothing, I'm just a little tired from being worked this whole time." He picked up his hoof and I noticed a deep cut, probably from a branch.
I bent down just enough so that I could touch the tip of my horn to the wound. It almost immediately healed, and he looked at me with an amazed look.
"Now that that's better, why don't you go get some sleep?" I suggested.
"When can we meet again?" he said quickly.
"Two nights from now?"
"Okay, I'll see you then, Lunaria." He stomped his now-healed leg.
And that was that.
I walked away, not wanting to. I ached to know more about him. I turned my head to look at him once more.
I couldn't help but think about the stallion later that night, too; his chestnut coloring, his clipped mane, his beautiful eyes that were colored just like the woods.
Could I really have feelings for him? He was destroying the woods.
He was destroying the most beautiful thing about him.
