The boy looked up at the unimpressive building before him and sighed. Transferring schools in the middle of the year as well as his high school career was not settling well with him.

It was almost funny as he walked up the steps, the song he was playing on his headphones, hidden under his shirt, seemed to fit the moment perfectly.

But it grew less humorous as he approached the main office and could sense the aura of hostility from the woman sitting at the front desk.

“Hi, um-” he started.

“What do you want?” the secretary demanded, cutting him off. “We are a very important school with a great number of very important things to get done.”

“I’m new. Today’s my first day.” He explained, annoyed at the fact that this woman got hired in a job that requires her to have good social skills.

“Here” She said, carelessly tossing a packet in front of him. “We don’t have any honor classes that aren't already over-filled, so you will be having most of your classes with juniors.”

She looked the boy up and down and sniffed “Even if you are a sophomore.”

The boy almost flinched at her words. Great, he thought. So I’m the new kid and the young and geeky one at that.

He took the abandoned packet and the woman’s icy silence as his cue to leave

Not knowing where his classroom was, the teen walked around the deserted halls. Class had already begun, but being the new kid and all, he had an excuse. Plus, he hardly cared.

He soon located the correct classroom and entered to see a number of incredibly bored faces turn curious and confused in a matter of seconds.

“Ah,” said the man in the front of the room. “You must be the new boy, Ryan Ross.”
