The next day I don’t go to school. Neither does Harmony. Drake is still with us and Violet and Ryder came over.
“My parents are soo mad at me for the Summers Life concert.” Ryder said.
“Why?” I ask. I think I know the answer.
“Because I am missing church.” She says. I am still not sure how I feel about her and her church people family. I am not fond of church people.
“Oh..”
“You should start coming to our youth group! Violet started coming, she thinks her old one is boring.”
“It was! This one is so much more fun.”
“Wait, both of you go to church?” I smirk.
“Yes, is there something wrong with that?” Ryder asks.
“She finds church people stuck-up and rude. They always try to get into her business and when they do they judge her. She just doesn’t like them.” Drake explains.
“Oh.. well then..” Ryder looks a little discouraged.
“Besides, if there is a God, why would all of this have happened to me? Why would he have gotten to my sister? If God was real, that wouldn’t have happened.” I say. I have always had strong feelings about this. A scream came from the bedroom. “Harmony!?” I ran in there. She was sitting up in her bed, sobbing her eyes out, covering her face. I go and sit next to her and just hold her. She has not stopped crying. Mom has heard nothing of this. She makes me so mad sometimes.. Even if she did know about it. She would throw her to a shrink and go back to work. Like she did with me.. I don’t really know what else to do but try to get her to calm down. There is nothing you really can do.. Harmony finally stops crying about an hour later.
“You need to call the police and get them here. He needs to be caught.” She says.
“I know..” I say. “Drake! Get the police down here!” I shout to the living room.
“Okay!” About fifteen minutes later the police show up. A female officer and a male officer.
“Can you please explain what happened?” The guy asks Harmony. She breaks out in tears again.
“Jeffery! Please leave the room so I can talk to her.” The female officer said. The male-Jeffery- walked out. “Hello, my name is Adriana Black. What’s yours?” She tries to ask Harmony. She can’t stop crying long enough to speak.
“I’m Melody and this is my little sister, Harmony.” I tell her.
“And who is the reason we’re here?”
“Both of us. We were..”
“Sexually abused?” She finished my sentence.
“Yes, we’ll go with that. We were both sexually abused by the same man.” She pulls out a notepad.
“What is the name of said man?”
“Jake. Jake Harris. Age, twenty-two. Caucasian. I have a picture.”
“Could you get this picture?”
“Yes. Harmony, I’m going to leave you right here for a second. Okay?”
“Okay..” She says. She is trying to calm down. I walk out to the living room and get into my old journal. I had tons of pictures of him in here. Only one actually of the both of us. I don’t remember when it was taken. I took it out and went back into the bedroom and gave the picture to the lady.
“This is the man?” She asks.
“Yes.” I answer.
“We will do everything in our power to make sure that this awful man gets caught and pays for his crime. Where is your parents, may I ask?”
“My mom is at work. She is actually a police officer as well. Cassidy White.”
“I know her.. I will make sure she get’s home soon. We will schedule counseling for the both of you.”
“I don’t need it. Mine was a year ago. I got counseling for it.”
“It is still something you have to do again. Mainly because I think Harmony will need you there. I have to go now. I will make sure your mother gets home soon, do not leave the house and make sure there is someone who can protect you until we can get an officer down here.”
“Ma’am, we don’t need an officer once my mom is home.”
“I know.” With that she walks out the door. I take Harmony out to the living room.
“Wanna play some Halo?” I ask her. She nods her head. I always know how to cheer her up. So we go and play Halo Reach for about an hour, then Ryder goes to get some food. My mom gets home at around three. She gets in the door and sets all her stuff down. She runs over to Harmony and hugs her. I can see tear streaks going down her face. She is just saying I’m sorry over and over. Harmony finally pushes her away.
“Mom, I’m fine now. Gah! You made me die..” She says. Speaking of her game. Then mom sorta laughs and gets up. She pulls me into her bedroom. The room farthest from the living room.
“Melody.. Where were you last night? If you knew Jake was here and Harmony was going to be home, why did you leave!?” She says. She is crying.
“Mom! I was scared of him! I always have been and you know that!” I screamed at her. I was sick of life at this time.
“You should’ve known better! I thought you were smarter than that! You were in charge of your sister and you let me down! Now look where we are!” She yells at me.
“Oh! I’m in charge of her!? Last I checked that was your job! I am fourteen and he scares me! I am furious that he got to her, but I knew if I didn’t leave that he would’ve gotten me again! So I left! I did exactly what you told me to do if he ever came back!”
“As soon as you figured Harmony might’ve been in trouble you should’ve taken responsibility and been the big sister she needs!”
“Maybe you should step up and be the mother we need!” I scream. I run into the bathroom and lock the door. I am balling. So many memories, all flooding back like a tsunami. I took out my blade and cut my wrist. Again and again. As the blood rolled down, my pain eased a bit. I am so sick of everything. Since when was I in charge of Harmony? Since when was I supposed to act as her mother!? The door opened a crack. I hid my blade in seconds. I had become skilled at doing that. It was Drake.
