Darkness. Screaming. Then, all of a sudden, nothing except one word. Mate.
As my eyes opened I soaked in my surroundings. A nightstand stood next to the cherry wood bed I was lying in. The nightstand held a lamp made out of a pufferfish. I pulled at the string and the small light lit up the room. The walls were the color of the ocean, a beautiful green. The floor was a tan carpet. Across from the bed was a mirror and dresser.
Dried starfish hung from my walls placed at random. It was obvious the theme of my room was the ocean, its been this way since I was a little girl. Always obsessed with the ocean. Always appreciative towards it. Never going against it. But of late, I find myself drifting apart from it. All because of some stupid prophecy.
I wiggled my legs under the white comforter draped over my bed. I have legs because I have command over when I shift into my fishy self. I am rare type of mermaid. I can command when I shift. A choice shifter as other fin folk call people like me. Normal mermaids grow a tail when they get wet.
I sighed knowing eventually I would have to get out of bed. I pushed myself out of the blankets comfortable embrace and I prepared myself for the beach today. I put my bikini top and bottoms on making sure it matched my tail.
You know how people say mermaids shift with automatic tops? That is a complete myth, that's why we always have a bikini top under our clothes.
The only thing that happens when we grow a tail is our hair changes, it has shells or pearls placed in it to match your tail. I have pearls, and the strings of hair that the pearls were placed on change to the color of my tail. Cool, huh?
My mom has pearls, just like me, and small sections of my dads hair changes color. So basically I received a mix of my parents hair change.
After putting a white see though top on I left my bedroom. I walked downstairs to see the kitchen empty. I wasn't hungry at all so I left my parents a note saying I went to the beach. I jogged outside into my porch and made my way to the beach.
I live two steps from the beach, literally. While walking to the water I couldn't help but think about what my 'special power' is. I haven't turned seventeen yet, so I haven't received my power. Merpeople have a weird thing where at sixteen you get your fish tail. At seventeen you are given your power.
My birthday is in one week, on the 28th of July. I am so ecstatic! By then I will receive my power. Of course I could get my power early but thats almost impossible.
When I reached my destination I stuck my foot in the water. It was lukewarm, as always.
The beach is somewhere in California. If I told you exactly where, I would be executed. So don't even think about it.
The beach was for supernatural creatures. Angels, werewolves, vampires, skin walkers, fin folk like me, and others. The most popular to come here are mermaids and werewolves. The two species are known for being active, so it makes sense.Vampires are the least likely to come, when they do they come out at night and avoid the other supernatural creatures at all costs.
Wind started to blow my hair into my face. The ocean breeze brought the scent of the sea was brought to my nose. The smell was pleasant. It was comforting. It meant home.
I looked down onto the water and saw my reflection. I have a golden tan and brown hair. My hair flows down my back in small waves. My lips are the lightest tint of red. My eyes are the color of my tail, light green blue and a very light pink. I'm not perfect, it think, but I am me. And I can't change that.
My reflection rippled as a small fish swam to me, that is another thing about being a mermaid or merman, sea animals instantly trust you with their life. I smiled at the fish, I recognized his small figure. I named this fish Mohawk, he has a black strip down his back that resembles a mohawk so I named him exactly that. I decided that he was my pet after two years of him constantly showing up by my feet.
"Hey little guy" I cooed while sitting in the water. I told Mohawk about my day yesterday starting with my best friend finding her mate and ending with the things I bought at the mall with her.
My thoughts trailed off to think about my best friend, she is like me. A mermaid. Her name is Ada, I met her on my first swim with my tail.
She is a normal mermaid, which means she shifts when she touches water. She has jet black hair and chocolate brown eyes. She has light red lips and a golden tan like me.
Her tail is golden with a mixture of orange. When she grows her tail she has seashells laid at random throughout her hair and sparkles. The sparkles in her hair are made from bunches of salt clumped together. Overall she was beautiful, and she had a kind heart and is random at times
"Storm!" A voice which I recognized as my brother yelled "Time to eat!". Looking down at Mohawk I said my goodbye and lifted myself out of the water to follow my 15 year old brother, Clay, into the house.
I sat on the bar stool by the island in the middle of the kitchen and ate my toast. I glanced over at my brother who has already managed to eat two bowls of Lucky Charms. How he downs that stuff so fast, I will never know. I am convinced he gulps it down and gets more before even swallowing.
His brown hair could easily be mistaken as black because of my mother, I thanked the sea gods that I had light brown hair. I couldn't imagine myself with black hair like my mother. I could never pull that off. Only the best of them could. My brother has green eyes and a surfers tan. My brother has a small build to him, as if he worked out every now an then.
My father looks exactly like him except for he has lighter brown hair like mine. He also has a bigger build than my brother. My mother is his mate. She has black hair and her eyes are the color of her tail like mine, but hers are a light icy blue. She has a surfers tan like my father and brother and was thin, like me.
As conversation went on, I ate a slice of cheese toast and wondered what the day would bring me.
