Hunting

Four years ago, my darkest secret was revealed to my most beloved friend. I had revealed myself as a devil and by some miracle that friend had accepted me. Now we stuck together, more than friends and protected by each other. Two 17 year olds wth dangerous secrets.

"Lindo, will you hurry up" I complained. I checked my watch and saw the minute hand slowly tick forward. We were going to be late for our hunt if he didn't get moving.
"Just because we have a job to do doesn't mean we can forget to eat" Lindo replied, finally coming through the front door of our apartment. In his hand was a brown paper bag, the contents of which he had spent the last 30 minutes cooking. I gave him the once over, my eyes glaring at the white filly apron he was wearing.
"You know we're going vampire hunting, right? you go out dressed like that the only thing thats going to be killing the vampires will be laughter" I sighed. Reaching around I pulled the knot at the back and tugged the apron off over his head.
"What would I do without you?" Lindo smiled pulling me against him.
"You'd get yourself killed, probably" I smirked. Standing on my toes I leaned up and placed a kiss on his lips. I felt him smile as he returned the favour.
"Well let's get going" Lindo smiles. Grabbing my hand he tugs me towards the expansive streets of London.
Lindo and I had been living in London for about a year now. It  was fun I'll admit, I got to see Lindo all the time (except for when he was at the exorcist headquarters) and spent my free time photographing London. However I did help Lindo with certain exorcist jobs, like today. This hunt basically involved taking down a rogue vampire that had been terrorising the outer suburbs.
"Where exactly are we headed" I ask as we walk through  the  cold streets. I would rather be at home where it's warm.
"Two more blocks is the  last recorded location, once there we track them down" Lindo stated, he always got more serious  when  we were hunting.
"You would think by now they would know not to kill their victims" I grumbled. We only had to hunt them if the exorcists got a report of a killed human as a result of vampire activities.
"They're monsters, they can't deny their instincts" he bit out coldly. I sighed, he was pretty uptight considering his heritage and all. I knew not to bring up that topic, he would get upset. Focusing on our surroundings I looked for anything to brighten the mood. Finally my eyes reach the sky.
"The moon looks amazing tonight. I love the full moon, it's so beautiful" I encourage.
"yeah" he replies, his voice sounding absent minded. Sometimes it was hard keeping Lindo in a conversation.
"We're here" he states. We were in a side street, with pipes running along the walls in a network of silver veins. Sniffing the air the first thing I could pick up was rats. I shuddered at the smell but continued, finally I found something. It was faint due to this afternoons rain but it was clearly a supernatural beings scent.
"You smell that?" I ask Lindo. He nods, his eyes looking along another street.
"It went this way" He said pointing along the cobblestone street. I nod in confirmation. He was better at picking up these things now. Following the trail the scent began to get stronger, however something was wrong. It smelled too strong for a single vampire.....it was a pair.
"There's two of them" I state, by the smell of it they were here to feed.

Together we traced the scent to an old street that looked like it was built to be a rats nest. It was disgusting and the smell of rot churned my stomach. However even with the stench of filth clouding the air the scent of the vampires grew heavy. We were close. Rounding the corner we found them.
The two vampires were hunched over what looked to be a human body; the body showed no signs of life, the person was already dead. Sensing our presence the vampires turned to us, blood stained their mouths as their teeth were revealed in a hideous hiss.
"You want help on this one?" I ask Lindo
"I've got this" he states.
Without another word he pulls out his holy water. The vampires see the movement and run forward. Lindo flicks the holy water in a wide arc, burning the vampires. This created a gap allowing Lindo time to run forward and strike. I watch the movements as he fights the vampires. His fighting had definitely improved, however I caught the occasional gleam in his eye; his eyes would glow red, hinting to the darker nature that threatened his composure. That was the most important part of me being here, to make sure he didn't give into the pull of darkness.  He had his cross in one hand as he cast a chant which resulted in one vampire being turned to dust. The other vampire screeched at the loss of its companion, it used Lindo's concentration on chanting to attack him. I watched as the vampire raked its claws into Lindo's shoulder, blood flowed heavily from the wound. My instincts screamed for me to step in but Lindo was very particular about me giving him chances to handle things himself; lately he was talking about wanting to be able to protect people on his own. I didn't understand why he felt the need to put that pressure on himself, I was always going to be here to help him.
Lindo yelled in pain and swung at the vampire, it was then I noticed the change in his fighting style. his body was more hunched and his eyes glowed scarlet red, he was losing his humanity. His elongated nails pierced the vampires heart, killing the enemy instantly.
I watched hoping he could calm himself down. He stood still, his breathing ragged and loud against the silent night. He looked up at me his eyes flickering. He was struggling.
"Lindo, calm down. Everything's alright now, everyone is safe" I said. We had worked out that the Dhampire abilities would usually activate as a defence mechanism. Slowly his eyes faded back to their original colour. I smiled as soon as he seemed to be back to his normal self.
"You got me worried" I stated as I walked over to him.
"I don't know what happened. I haven't had that happen in months" he replied, his eyes reflecting shame. I stepped forward and hugged him. He wrapped his arms around me, his head resting atop of mine. He felt warm, a welcome presence in the cold night.
"It's over. The hunts finished, the rogues are dead. Let's get out of here and eat that food you made" I said. He sighed as he pulled back. I watched as he glanced to the dead human on the street a few feet away from us. It clearly bothered him that we didn't get here in time to save that person.
"There's nothing you could have done" I said softly. I watched his eyes as he stared at the body, his eyes were hooded beneath his red hair. Tugging on his hand I pulled him away from the body. It was better he didn't stare at it for too long, it would play on his mind for a while.

After getting away from the body we ate our meal in a quiet section of town. It was roughly 4 in the morning by the time we got back to our apartment. Lindo was silent as we got ready for bed, and he fell asleep without saying a single word. My heart clenched as I fell asleep, I knew he would be plagued by that humans death; Lindo found death hard to accept.

I fell into a restless sleep until I finally woke up 2 hours later. Bleary eyed I managed to read the clock as it read 6.00. glanced over at Lindo who was fast asleep. He would sleep for another half hour at least. Getting up I went into the kitchen. Our apartment was small consisting of a lounge, kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom. I sat down in the lounge allowing the darkness to give me comfort. I found it hard to pretend to be human; I still longed to use my more powerful magic and craved the taste of a persons soul. It was hard to resist the temptation but somehow Lindo made it bearable. Slowly the sky outside began to lighten, allowing the room to fill with light as the plainly furnished room became illuminated. Finally Lindo woke up, he stumbled into the room, his hair ruffled and his eyes still half closed. He was dressed in long blue pyjamas. He always dressed so weirdly, even when he went to sleep.
"Morning sleepy head" I smirked.
"Why are you always the first one up" he yawned as he walked into the kitchen. He stumbled over to the kettle and began to make some coffee.
"Probably because your snoring wakes me up" I joked. he smiled at my comment, he knew full well he didn't snore. He quickly made two cups of coffee and walked into the lounge; sitting down next to me he handed me one of the mugs. I sipped the warm beverage, revelling in the intoxicating liquid.
"So what are you going to get up to today?" Lindo asked. Since Lindo spent most of his time at the institute, a place I couldn't enter, I had to occupy myself with various activities on my own.
"I might go and take some photos to send to Ritsuka. She said last week that she wanted me to send her more photos." I replied. Lindo smiled, his head nodding slightly.
"Well, if I want to get to the institute on time I'm going to have to get moving" he said. I sighed at his comment, I wanted to spend more time with him. Lindo rose from the couch and headed to the bathroom. I sighed as I stared at my coffee. Just another typical day in the human world.
