The three remaining hobbits charged after the beast, hacking at it with swords that were as useful as toothpicks. Legolas was the first to shoot, into one on the long tentacles that held Frodo, and the monster screeched in pain. Several slimy limbs came to knock them away but Aragorn sliced through with ease. He and Boromir waded through the water, cutting each tentacle they came across while Legolas fired, time and time again, careful not to hit them with his arrows.

Finally Frodo was released as Aragorn cut into the beast, and Boromir caught him in his arms.

"Everyone inside!" Gandalf cried. "Quickly!"

The monster was catching up, even crawling across the dry land.

"Legolas!" Boromir yelled.
"Get to the cave!" Aragorn called to him, but he didn't listen.

Instead Legolas pulled out an arrow, placing it in his bow.
His arm bent and stretched as he aimed.
He let out a breath and released.
The bow whized past the men, hitting the beast in the eye.

Aragorn ran to the cave, not looking back or sparing a moment to think. Legolas put his arm around him, dragging the human further into the mines as the walls began to crumble. His arm was strong and tensed, and Aragorn could feel his pulse racing against his own neck. Legolas didn't let go, pulling Aragorn into his chest as the entrance came tumbling down around them, creating a barrier between the danger and the man in his arms.

No one had ever protected the ranger in that way before.

All went quiet, apart from the pounding of hearts and raging of breath. Aragorn looked up into Legolas' eyes, sparkling even in the dark. Before he could even gratify him though, the elf upped and left as Gandalf lit the mine, helping the others.

"We now have but one choice," Gandalf said gravely. "We must face the long, dark of Moria."
Gandalf seemed worried, and if he was scared then something was seriously bad.
"Be on your guard." He warned. "There are older and eviler things than just Orcs that live in the dark. Quietly now, it's a four day journey to the other side - let us hope we go unnoticed."
The mines grew colder and narrower the further they travelled, and the corpses kept growing in population. They came to a huge cavern, whose bottom could not be seen nor measured. Gandalf stopped and turned to the fellowship. "The wealth of Moria was not in gold out jewels, but methryl." He pointed his staff into the chasm, and it lit up like stars in the night sky. It reflected onto them all, and Aragorn couldn't help but be distracted.

Even in a mine filled with the most valuable and beautiful object in the whole of Middle Earth, he couldn't remove my eyes from the fair elf amongst the company. His blond hair was knotted from the wind and the fight, his skin dirty from the mines and robes damp from the snow but Aragorn thought he looked incredible. He had a raw kind of beauty, and he wasn't delicate like most of the elves and women he knew. This was new to Aragorn - and he liked it.

Legolas felt the staring and looked to Aragorn, cheeks flushing and eyes asking a thousand questions that he would never voice.

Boromir pushed past him and continued on the narrow path. "Keep up, ranger."

Their path turned steep, up small stairs that crumbled with each step. Ahead were three identical doorways, and Gandalf sat in front of them, deciding. They rested by a small fire and ate food made by Sam while they waited. Merry and Pippin were talking quietly, Boromir and Gimli sleeping and Frodo with Gandalf. Aragorn walked over to where Legolas and Sam were sitting by the fire. They were sharing recipes of their respective races and comparing the foods they had. He sat next to Legolas and the elf smiled at him brightly. Sam looked between the pair and chuckled to himself, as if he knew something they didn't. Sam and Legolas continued their chatter and Aragorn began to fall asleep, entranced by Legolas' soft voice.

He was woken a few hours later by a light tapping on my cheek.

"Aragorn?" He was suddenly shoved out of his comfy position and landed on the hard rock, groaning. "Get up, we're moving." Legolas said, now looming over him rather than having him sprawled and drooling on his shoulder.
The ranger wiped his mouth and followed after the hobbits and Gandalf, overhearing some advice about following your nose.
