Chapter 16

---

'Happy birthday to you, you live in a zoo. You look like a monkey and you smell like one too. Happy birthday Chassidy.' All those words are the ones that woke me up the next morning. September 6. 16-years old.

On my nightstand was a card. On the cover it had monkeys quoting happy birthday. And on the inside was that custom sound box.

I didn't really want anything for my birthday, it's not like when I was little I got all those toys that I loved. I don't even want a sweet sixteen and that was the sad thing... I reached for my phone to see if anyone in particular texted me. But the screen was blank.

Suddenly, I started feeling really hot, almost like I was sweating. And the feeling when you need to run to the bathroom came back. I tried to get up as fast as I could but the weight of my stomach wouldn't let me. I took a couple deep breaths and used all my strength to get up. By this time, it started to come up faster. Somehow I made it up fast enough and ran to the bathroom.

For some reason I feel so much better after my face has been lying on the porcelain bowl for a good 20 minutes. I took a cool shower and just dressed in comfy clothes.

You could smell the fresh smell of sweet blueberries coming from downstairs. Either my mom or dad were making blueberry pancakes and french toast. For us four kids it's always been a special breakfast. We usually just have whatever whenever, but if it's someones birthday, that special breakfast, we all come together.

I slowly walked downstairs and snuck out on the pool deck. It was cooler since yesterday and the sky was cloudy.

I walked on the beach towards the water. The sand was cold and the water was probably colder. I sat down right in the middle of the beach. As you looked outward, you could see surfers riding the waves.

I closed my eyes and let the sound of the ocean take me away. The calm salty breeze makes me feel alive. It felt like I was lost in time. The way the seagulls are croaking for food and the low discussions that are occurring out in the distance, everything felt so safe. So wild and free.

"Happy 16th birthday." A voice came from behind me. I turned around to see Jared in kaki shorts and a sky blue tee. His hair was down and messy. I liked it better that way, it showed the real him.

I felt a tumble inside of me. I thought that there was butterflies in my stomach and then felt a sharp pain of nails scraping my insides. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

"Are you okay?" he asked rubbing my back.

I nodded, "Yeah, it hurts when they move."

"Like I said, I'm really sorry. I should've never said what I said. It's just he's a complete ass for leaving you when you really needed him." the guilt on his face made me feel even worse...

"It's okay, I don't want to talk about him leaving. After all it is my birthday and I'd like to stay happy." I smiled.

"Then good," he pulled out a purple box, "this is for you. And I will not take it back. It's your birthday present."

I looked up at him and grab the box. As much as I don't want it, I can't refuse because I love presents so much. I opened the box and inside was a silver pendent wrapped in a matching silver chain.

"No. I can't take this. I really can't." I stood up and forced it back in his hands.

"Chassidy, please. It's yours." Jared

insisted.

"No. I gotta go." I headed back to my house and slammed the sliding door shut behind me. I was breathing real fast and I couldn't catch up with my breath...
