Chapter 16 (My Hero)
I woke up early. It was still dark out. At first I was wondering why I was sleeping outside and then I remembered the night before. The camping out, the music…. The proposal. I looked at my ring finger. The beautiful, diamond ring was around it. I smiled. “Admiring your ring?”
I turned to face Nate, who was propped up on his elbow, watching me with a smile. I nodded. “It’s beautiful. Thank you,” I said, smiling.
Nate smiled, kissing my forehead. “You’re welcome. I had it customized.”
“How?”
“Take it off and look on the inside of it.”
I did as he told and gasped when I saw it. On the inside were the words “Forever & Always” on it. I couldn’t help the goofy smile that was appearing on my face. “God, Nate… I’m speechless,” I said, smiling at him.
Nate smiled. “I was hoping for that.”
We continued to smile at each other when I realized something. “Nate, have you been watching me sleep this whole time?” I asked, laughing.
Nate shrugged, smiling. “Maybe.”
I laughed, tucking my head into his neck. “Creeper.”
Nate kissed me on the forehead, sighing. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” And with that, I fell into a happy sleep.

After a few more hours of sleep, we walked back into the house, hand in hand. Mr. Lively was at the table, drinking his coffee. “Good morning, you two. Sleep well?” he asked, a smile on his face.
Nate nodded, looking at me lovingly. “Sure did. Show him, Janey,” he said, letting go of my hand.
I walked towards Mr. Lively and held out my hand, showing him the beautiful ring. Mr. Lively took my hand and inspected the ring, a smile forming on his face. “You really proposed?” he asked, looking at Nate.
Nate nodded. Mr. Lively let go of my hand and walked over to Nate. “Congratulations, my son,” he said, shaking Nate’s hand before pulling him into a big bear hug.
Nate smiled. “Thanks. Well, let’s go, Jane. We got to go tell your sister,” he said, taking my hand and leading me away.

I unlocked my house door. “Rose?” I called out, with Nate following behind me.
“Jane? You home?” Rose asked, coming out of the kitchen.
I smiled, nodding. “Yeah. I slept at Nate’s.”
Rose smiled. “I see you did. The fact that you didn’t come home until today and the big smile on your face. I call tell.”
“That’s not the only reason she’s smiling,” Nate said, kissing me on the cheek.
Rose’s face turned to confusion. “Why?”
I brought up my hand, showing her the ring. Rose’s face turned from confusion, to shock, then to happiness. “Oh my god!” she yelled, looking at my ring.
“I know, right?” I said, smiling.
Rose looked at Nate. “You proposed?” she asked, wide eyed.
Nate laughed, nodding. “Yup!”
Rose smiled. “I can’t believe it! Oh my gosh…. Can I be your maid of honor?” she asked, pleadingly.
