Chapter 6:

"Are you sure we are going to fit on here?" Nate asked, looking at the couch we were sleeping on.

I nodded. "I think so. Unless you want to sleep on my broken bed, be my guest."

Nate laughed and laid down on the couch. He gestured for me to come over. I raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

"I want to see if we can both fit on here. Lay down with me."

I cautiously stepped closer to the couch but Nate pulled me down anyways, putting my head down into his chest, one arm wrapped protectively around me. A smile grew on my face. Nate nodded. "I think we can make this work," he said, smiling.

I nodded just as Rose came through the front door. She jumped as she saw us on the couch, probably thinking we were naked or something. “Oh, I’m sorry! Am I interrupting something?”

Nate laughed. “No, it’s okay, Rose. We are just testing out the couch to see if we both fit on it. I hope its okay with you but I’ll be sleeping over tonight.”

Rose nodded. I knew she wouldn’t mind in the first place. “That’s okay. Are you sure you guys don’t want to sleep in mom and dad’s room?” she asked, a sad look on her face appearing.

I shook my head. “No. I think we can manage on the couch. It’s actually comfortable. I’ll just bring in the blankets and pillows from my room,” I said.

Rose smiled. “Okay. Well, goodnight,” she said, disappearing upstairs.

Nate turned his attention back to me. “I kind of like this position, do you?”

I gulped, nodding. “A bit.”

Nate smiled a sly smile, trailing his fingers up my arm and to my face, running his index finger under my chin. I fought the urge to laugh. I was ticklish. “Stop that,” I said in a breathless tone.

Nate laughed, shaking his head. “Make me,” he said, now running his finger down my chest and to my stomach.

I squirmed under his touch as he drew little circles on my stomach over my shirt. “S-stop. Please!” I pleaded, trying to turn on my side but his arm stopped me from moving.

Nate laughed, finally stopping. “I forgot how ticklish you were,” he said, an amused expression on his face.

I glared at him but dropped it when he swiftly planted a kiss on my forehead. “Don’t look at me like that. You’re just asking for more,” he scolded.

I grumbled. “I don’t like being tickled!”

“But I get to hear that adorable laugh of yours!”

“Still.”

I got up, going upstairs to get the blankets and pillows. “I’ll be back,” I said, jokingly saying it like the terminator.

After I quickly changed into sweats and a t-shirt, I grabbed some pillows and blankets and started making my way downstairs when I bumped into Nate. I jumped in fright. “Shit! You scared me!” I said, trying to get my heartbeat back to normal.

Nate stifled a laugh grabbing the blanket in my arms, leaving me with just two pillows. “Thanks,” I mumbled.

We went back downstairs and set up the couch, putting the two pillows on one end of the couch. Nate got in first and then I did, snuggling into his chest as he put the blanket over us. I sighed, happily breathing him in. He played with my hair as I closed my eyes, thinking of scenarios that will obviously never happen. “I love you Natey,” I said, smiling into the words.

Nate was silent for a second. Then he sighed.

“I love you too Janey.” I frowned. It didn’t sound too happy, in fact, it sounded really sad. I dropped the thought and drifted off to sleep.

I woke up to the sound of Nate, talking to himself, it seemed. Then I realized he was talking on the phone. How he managed to get off the couch from under me, I’ll never know. I was probably a really heavy sleeper. “Yeah, dad, I’m fine. Don’t worry! I’ll be home tomorrow! I’m okay, dad, relax! What? No, honestly, I’m fine! Just chill, okay? It’s late, go to bed. I’ll be home in the morning. Okay. Yeah, I know. Bye.”

Nate hung up the phone and let out a groan of frustration. He seemed really stressed out. I flinched at how frustrated he seemed. He sighed and turned around, jumping in fright as he didn’t know I was awake.

“Hey Janey, go back to sleep. It’s midnight,” he said, crawling back in the couch under me. I raised my head to look up at him.

“Your dad seemed pretty worried. Are you okay?”

“Yeah, don’t worry about it. I’m fine. Just go to sleep.”

“You can go home if you like. I don’t want your dad getting worried.”

“No Janey, I’m fine. Seriously. He’s just overprotective. Don’t worry. Just go back to sleep.”

I sighed and snuggled into his chest, closing my eyes. That was weird. His dad was never that worried before. I turned my head and kissed his arm that was wrapped around me.

“Goodnight, Natey,” I said, this time not saying I love you.

Nate kissed the top of my head. “Goodnight.”
