Chapter 21:
Everything was just a blur. A big, white blur. I could hear phones going off and the faint sound of Liam trying to calm me down by telling me a funny story but the sounds came out distorted and muffled. I felt like fainting.
I got extremely dizzy and began seeing spots of different colours. Everything became numb. What the hell was happening? Suddenly, they disappeared, leaving me in shock so I began to cry even more.
Liam gasped. "Oh god, you're so pale! Are you sure you don't need anything? Food?"
I shook my head. "I'm fine. It's okay. I'm just here for Nate, that's all."
Liam sighed. "He's going to be fine. It's okay."
I sniffled. "I don't know, Liam. Maybe this is it for him."
Liam shook his head. "Don't say that. He's going to make it out alive. Nate is a strong guy. I don't think God will let him go just yet."
I frowned. "Yet."
Liam sighed. "I'll always be there for you though, okay? I still remember..." he said, trailing off as he looked to the side.
I looked at him curiously. "Remember what?"
Liam looked at me, giving me a small smile. "Remember that time when we all went out to eat? You, Nate, and me? It was the first time I met Nate."
I remembered. I smiled a little at the memory. "I remember."
Liam smiled. "Yeah, that time. Before we all left, I remember Nate whispering to me that I should be a good friend to you and that I should always stick by you if anything ever happens to him. And you know what? That is happening right now and where am I? Right beside you, always. I wouldn't leave you, Jane. Not in times like these."
I smiled. "You are a really great friend, Liam. Thank you for being there for me."
Liam laughed, shaking his head. "Anytime."
------------------------------------------------------------
After a long time and a dozen walks to the cafeteria to eat, I told Liam to go home. "Are you sure? I can stay if you want to. I have no problem with it," he said, staying put.
I shook my head, giving him a smile. "No, it's okay. Go. You must be tired," I said.
Liam looked a bit reluctant, but relieved to go home. I wouldn't blame him. He was here the whole day. It was now just approacing night time and we've been here since 9 in the morning. Liam stretched out his arms. "Give me a hug."
I smiled, giving him a big, grateful hug. "Thank you so much," I said for about the thousanth time that day.
Liam laughed. "No problem. Call me if you need anything. I'll drive right over here. Doesn't matter what time, okay?"
I smiled. "Okay, bye."
After he left, I was approached by a nurse looking woman. "Jane Lively?" she asked me.
My breath caught in my throat. I nodded. "That's me."
The nurse gave me a sad smile. Oh no, was she going to say what I think she was? "Nate is just fine," she said, making me let out a big sigh of relief.
I held a hand to my heart. It was pounding so hard, I thought it was going to burst. "Thank god."
"His leukemia was acting up during his sleep. He's in a coma right now but he's doing okay. You may go up and see him," she said, smiling.
I smiled and eagerly followed the nurse to his room. I immediately felt a sense of relief when I saw Nate, in his hospital bed. Sure, he was hooked up to the wires and looked really pale and tired, but I was just glad to see him. "I'll give you two some time," the nurse said, before leaving the room.
I sat down in a chair beside the bed. I grabbed his hand and gave it a small squeeze. "Hey Natey, I hope you are doing okay."
Silence.
I bit my lip, thinking of what to say. "I made you breakfast in bed. Buttered toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, and your coffee."
Silence.
"I got up really early to make it. It's okay, though since you always make me breakfast in bed. Too bad you didn't get to eat it," I said, sadly.
More silence. I sighed. "Okay, Nate... You really scared me there. I thought I... Lost you. I wasn't prepared for that. I can't lose you just yet. I love you too much to let you go. I know it would be for the best but still... Please Nate, just hang on a bit longer. For me... Please," I said, tears streaming down my cheeks.
I cried for a few more minutes. Not saying anything. Just crying. I called my sister and told her of the news. She would visit tomorrow. I called Nate's dad and told him earlier about what happened. He was unavailable the whole day but said he would come tomorrow. Right now, I felt really alone. Nate was here, sure, but I felt like he wasn't really here.
----------------------------------------------------------
"Jane?"
"Mmm..."
"Jane, you need to wake up now."
I moaned a bit in my sleep. I felt so tense. Where was I? "Nate?" I called, still half asleep and eyes closed.
I opened my eyes to reveal a nurse. She gave me a sad smile. "No, Jane. I'm Nurse Lucy. You need to go downstairs now. We need to run some tests on Nate, again. Why don't you go home and rest for a bit?" she suggested.
I sighed, nodding. I took the elevator downstairs, calling Nate's dad. I really didn't want to leave Nate but I bet they would kick me out of the hospital for refusing to leave. I called my sister to pick me up.
--------------------------------------------------------
"Jane!"
I looked towards the sight of my sister, running through the hospital doors. "Is Nate okay? Are you okay?" she asked, grabbing my face in her hands worriedly.
I nodded. "I'm fine. Nate's fine. They are doing tests on him now but he's okay. He's alive."
Rose sighed out of relief. "Oh thank goodness... Do you want to go home? Are you hungry?" she asked.
I nodded. "Just take me home. I'm going to take a nap for a bit and then I'm coming back here."
Rose's eyes widened. "Are you sure? I mean, aren't you tired?"
I gave her a small smile. "It's Nate... I have to stay here."
Rose frowned but nodded. "Okay... Well, call me if you need anything, okay? You also have Liam."
