"See that girl?"
"The one singing to the roses?"
"Yes m'boy."
"What about her father?"
"That's our future queen, and if you plan on being in the royal guard squad, you must learn to protect the things she loves and who she loves as well as the princess herself. Do you understand?"
"Yes father..."
I jerk awake, taking a moment to realize where I was.
It was the royal library.
A soft sound made me reach for my gun but I soon realize that it was the princess, her breathing slow as she sleeps with the book she was reading hours before.
I couldn't help but smile as I make my way towards her slowly, taking the book carefully from her loose grasp and marking her page before setting it on the table.
I turned to look at the princess again, everything of the little girl gone as the women, my future queen, sleeps peacefully.
Carefully I graze my fingers across her jaw, her skin still soft.
In my mind I see the adventurous girl that used to play in the garden and sing to the roses, who trained with swords beside me when she was four while Demitrias sat back and stayed lazy.
She remembered me as the gardener's son, not as the man who protected her from wild dogs and thieves.
But the traitorous duke had used technology to mess with her memories.
Hopefully soon she will remember more.
I smile at how innocently she slept and looked, her eye lids fluttering as she dreamed.
"I wonder what you dream about" I whisper gently, leaning forward to brush my lips on her temple in a light kiss.
"Sky..."I froze, thinking she had woken up to see me watching over her.
But I realised she was still dreaming after a few moments.
She dreams about me.
That thought made me smile as I walked back to my chair, stopping when I realized that I was starving.
I sighed.
I didn't want to leave her side to grab something to eat in case something or someone came to hurt my Queen.
But my stomach kept growling and I was sure it would wake Alli
Sighing once again, I open the door and come face to face with a maid, giving her a fright.
"Sorry Sir Skylard, I was doing my rounds of cleaning." She said panting, her eyes wide as she presses a hand to her chest.
"Its my fault, I was about to head to the kitchen for something to eat, I am in the middle of doing some work for the Princess and lost track of time." I told the maid the half lie and smiled sweetly down at her.
"Would it be too much to ask you if you can grab me some food to eat?"
"Not at all, if it's work for our soon to be Queen, then I will gladly get some food for you so that youcan continue. "
"Thank you, just knock when you have it and I will come to the door to grab it."
With that, the maid left me and I returned inside the library, sitting on a chair closest to the door where I can see Alli and still be able to protect her.
"Protect the things she loves, who she loves, and her aswell." I whispered the chant I had memorised from those days long ago when I first saw her singing to the roses.
She was only three at the time, but she was perfect.
A soft knock at the door startled me, and I grabed my gun while slowly making my way quietly to the door.
"Sir Skylard, I brought you your food."
It was the maid from earlier, her voice muffled by the thick doors.
Quickly I holstered my gun and opened the door, taking the basket of food from the maid and thanking her.
She smiled and left again and I closed the door, locking it and sitting back down in my chair across from Alli.
After making sure that she was still asleep, I slowly searched through the basket and smiled when I found bagels, chocolate chip muffins, grapes and a few bottles of water.
I checked for poison first before grabbing a bottle of water and a muffin.
The Princess slept soundly and I went back to watching her, time ticking slowly as she slept.
