Prologue

Run

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." - Winston Churcill

~Fang's POV~

"Fang, Hit harder!"

I rolled my eyes and yelled back, "What do you think I'm doing?!"

My mother placed her hands on her hips, "Not doing what I tell you too."

Halting my actions and stepping away from the make-shift punching bag, I turned towards my mother.

"Mom, I don't know how you expect me to hit a duffel bag full of leaves any harder without it breaking."

My mother huffed and crossed her arms, tapping her foot impatiently, "Look. We don't have a lot of time to train, Remember? Your supposed to hit the duffel bag whenever we have time to train so your strength doesn't weaken when we need it most."

"But, Mom! You need your strength, too!" , I argued.

My mother sighed and rubbed her temples irritably then threw her hands up in the air, "Fine! One roundhouse kick, alright? There's a reason why I don't train y'know."

I nodded and stepped away from the duffel bag, "Cause you're the lookout. I know, I know. Can you kick the goddamn duffel bag, already? I wanna see my mom in action!"

Shaking her head my mother sighed and walked over to the duffel bag, took a few steps back before taking a fighting stance and eyeing the duffel bag, most likely imagining it as her opponent. My mother released a long breath before letting out a grunt as she shot herself forward and did a roundhouse kick on the duffel bag.

I watched in amazement and pride as the duffel bag fell from the tree branch it was hanging on and landed on the ground, split in half, causing the leaves to cover the soggy grass underneath it.

"So, cool!", I yelled.

My mother turned to me with a bright smile and said, "Your father taught it to me."

"Mom..", I sighed painfully knowing just how bad talking about my father hurt her.

She shook her head and spoke, "Darling, It's fine. I know your father fought for us and I feel better that he's dead rather than living a life of pain trying to protect us."

Regaining my emotions, I nodded with a small smile gracing my lips.

My mother smiled warmly and walked over to me, "C'mon, Let's go."

We both walked over to our makeshift hut and stripped of our clothes, keeping them in our arms so we could carry them and change back into them when we needed too.

Being my mother she just ran out of our makeshift hut before shifting in an open space.

Her light golden brown fur and light grey eyes stared back at me as she waited for me to run out and shift as well.

Unlike her, I am shy.

I may be strong.

But, I'm shy.

When I hesitantly stood up and started to scan my surroundings my mother huffed and stated to paw the ground anxiously.

Grumbling profanities under my breath I searched the area once again with my eyes before running out of our little make-shift hut and jumping in the air, shifting as I did so.

My dark grey fur prickled my body as it started to grow, my bones cracked and shifted in different areas, until I landed on the ground on all fours.

Crunching the damp soil underneath my paws, I clawed at it. Enjoying the feeling of it on my callused paw pads.

'Stop messing with the soil and let's go'

My mother linked me as she whipped my behind with her own tail, grabbed her clothes, and padded forward.

'Gee, Thanks mom for the tail whipping'

I linked back as I grabbed my own clothes and moved myself forward until I reached her side, following her pace.

Watching my surroundings carefully, I kept an eye on everything.

The trees.

The bushes.

The tall grass beds.

Any place where a wolf could hide and easily ambush us.

I didn't need another family loss, all I had was my mother and I intend to keep her as long as I can.

My ears flickered around on top of my head.

Behind me.

In front of me.

To my right.

To my left.

Listening to any sound at all.

From a birds chirp to the sound of the leaves rustling in the trees.

And suddenly we both stopped.

Our ears flickering to the South, Behind us.

A howl, it was low-pitched but it was there.

'Run'

My mother linked me as she started to trot forward until she was in a full-out run.

I pushed off of the soggy ground. It didn't give me much of a boost but when I started to run full throttle I instantly caught up to my mom until I was ahead of her by a few paces.

My ears flickered to the south again.

Another howl.

Their closer.

Dammit.
