“We hit the Kansas border!” Colby tells me, shaking me awake.  “No more mountains and only ten more miles to Goodland!”

I rub my eyes.  “Thanks,” I groan.  “Sorry I fell asleep.”

“Ahh, that’s alright.  You probably needed a nap.”

            “I look that bad?”

Colby looks shocked.  “Oh, no!  I just mean—well—I’m glad you got some rest.”

I fidget in my seat to make myself comfortable.  “Whatever.  Did Jen get any sleep?”

Colby shakes his head and laughs.  “Nope.  She’s been having too fun with Marius.  Don’t you hear her?”

I turn in my seat and crane my neck to look back.  Sure enough, Jenna is playing Peek-a-boo with her nephew.  She spots me and helps Marius to wave his tiny hand at me.  “Say hi to Uncle Colin!” she giggles.

“Aww, I’m not his uncle yet.”

“You might as well be.  We’ve been engaged for six years.”

“And still not married,” I muse.  “But it will happen his time.”

“I’m happy to hear that,” Jenna remarks.  “Did you hear that?  Aunt Jenny’s gonna get married!  Yeah!” she coos to the baby, who giggles and sputters.

I turn around and blow air out of my cheeks.  Colby notices.  “Don’t worry, they aren’t like that for long, thank goodness.”  He turns back to driving, putting on his turn signal to go into the right lane as we approach our exit.  “But it seems like an eternity.”

I groan.  “And who know how many Jen’s gonna want.”

“Ten!” my fiancée yells from the back seat.

            “No,” I flatly tell her.

“It takes two to make a…” Colby begins.

“Yes, yes it does!” I say louder.

“Oh that’s not the part I’m worried about!  That’s the easy part!” Jenna smirks.

“And what do you mean by that?” I exclaim.

“I’m saying,” Jenna enunciates, clearing her throat, “that men are gullible.”

“And this conversation is over,” I finish, turning around to face the front again.

            “Goodland!  One mile!” Colby announces.

My heart starts beating faster.  So much could change in six years: places, streets, people.  I admit that I am a little intimidated, but excited to see what I’ve missed.  Jenna said that there was a surprise waiting for me, but I have no idea what it could be.

“Did you hear that?” Jenna coos to Marius, “We are almost home!”

I can take it no longer.  “What’s the surprise, Jen?”

“Huh?” Jenna looks at me, surprised.  “Oh, that surprise!  Colby, could you drive by the high school?  Colin should know the way.”
