ACT ONE

The curtain rises.

In view is Emilie's bedroom. She is seen lying on her bed, on her stomach, and writing on a piece of paper with a pen. There aren't any lights except for some electric candles scattered about her room, brightening it only enough for us to see her write. There is a window on the back wall of the set covered with white curtains. Most things in the room are white, but there is also the accent color of pale pink – not a salmon, but more of a Mimi pink.

Emilie's bed is twin sized and on the left side of the set if viewed from the front, positioned so only the head of the bed is touching the wall. She is seventeen years of age, dressed as a hipster-esque girl her age would be: flannel, ripped skinny jeans, converse. There is a white nightstand next to her bed, a lit pink lamp on it along with a cup of water. Emilie smiles as she's writing.

Her father, Walter Lawlor, enters from stage right, through an empty doorframe. He glances at Emilie before speaking.

WALTER (a blank expression across his face, asks with curiosity): Emilie?

EMILIE (looks at her father and sits up): Yes, dad?

WALTER (shakes his head slightly, brushing his thoughts away): Are you writing to that boy again?

EMILIE (nods once, an innocent smile on her face): Mhm, why do you ask?

WALTER: He called for you. (unsure) Something about him being allowed?

EMILIE (tries to hide her excitement): Oh, thanks, dad; I'll call him back in a bit.

Walter smiles, then exits where he came. Emilie picks up the piece of paper, gives the center of it a little kiss, folds it in half, and sets it on her nightstand. She picks up a white cell phone and is seen dialing. She presses it to her ear.

EMILIE (smiles): Nathaniel? It's me, Emilie. My father said you called for me? (pauses to listen) (an excited grin instantly spreads across her face) Really? Oh, wow! I can't believe it's true! How soon? (pauses to listen) Two days?! I'll start preparing for your arrival! I can hardly wait! (pauses to listen) (smiles) I'll talk to you soon. Goodbye, Nathaniel. (she is seen hanging up the phone) (she grins wildly, full of excitement) (she starts to run out stage right and calls out) Mother, I have exciting news! (she disappears)

The curtain falls, ending the scene.

The curtain rises.

In view is Nathaniel's bedroom. He is seen darting back and forth between his bed and behind the set. When he goes behind the set and is out of sight, he grabs a handful of clothes and comes back into sight, throwing them on his bed. He has a large pile of miscellaneous clothes before his mother, Mary, slinks into his room.
