It had been a long day at work, and Ohm was ready to just head home and collapse on the couch, maybe play a game or two before passing out. He normally didn't work Sundays, but some sort of emergency had occurred in the office that required him to come in last minute.

He kind of hated how it had worked out. Today was Valentine's Day after all, his second with Max, and though it wasn't as special as the first he had still been excited to spend the whole day together. They'd even had reservations and movie tickets ordered before Ohm had gotten the call that morning.

He sighed in his car, lifting his head from where it had rested on the steering wheel and finally turning the keys in the ignition. He supposed he should hurry home now and spend what was left of the day doing something Valentine-y.

The car hummed to life and he drove through the streets that were still fairly well lit by the sun, while his car dashboard informed him it was only 5:30. Too late to meet their reservations, but not too late for the movie or some other place. Checking the speed limit, he shrugged to himself and went five over.

He was nearing his house when his phone lit up in the seat next to him, leading him to scramble for it on reflex. His finger answered before he'd even checked the ID and the phone was pressed to his ear. "Hello?"

"You coming home soon?"

Instant tension dropped out of his shoulders, and he felt his face warm when he understood it, even though he was completely alone. If Max knew what a soothing presence he was in Ohm's life, he'd probably tease him relentlessly.

It took a few seconds before he remembered to respond. "What? Oh, yeah. I'm on my way. About two minutes. Listen, I'm-"

His attempts to apologize were interrupted by a loud crashing noise in the background across the phone, making Ohm's heart jump until he realized something had just dropped or fallen over. He snickered. "You okay there?"

"Yup!" Max responded, too quick and indignant, and the scuffling of something that sounded like a pan or plate being picked up off tile was only barely muffled.

Ohm turned into the neighborhood. "I'll see you in a few minutes."

"Yup," Max repeated, too quick and humored once again before he hung up. Ohm furrowed his brow and put the phone into his lap, suspicious. There was no doubt in his mind Max was planning something and he felt bad about it, Max shouldn't have to make Valentine's Day all by himself just because Ohm had been called in at the worst day possible. Wondering what he was cooking- because he surely had to be making a dinner, he'd definitely heard something from the kitchen fall.

The car stuttered as its ignition was cut inside the garage, and Ohm was out of the car before the sound had even properly begun to finish. The air was cold outside, but the second he entered the house it was warm enough to make his fingertips tingle with feeling.

And also his nose twitch at a confusing smell.

Cautiously, he ducked his head around the corner in the direction of the kitchen only to find black smoke rising to the ceiling. The same time he saw it, the fire alarm began to ring its ghastly song that would have made him wince had he not already been running to the kitchen.

"Max!" He called out, grabbing a dish towel next to the oven and wondering where in the world his boyfriend had disappeared to. The flames in the pan popped with the grease, making him shriek and stumble back and the fire increased dramatically in size. He coughed at the offending smoke in his nose and covered it with his arm before surging forward again. He threw the towel onto the fire and sighed with relief when it instantly shrank to smaller embers on top of the charred remains of whatever had originally been in the bowel. Catching his breath with a hand over his heart, he leaned against the counter and closed his eyes.

Padding feet came running, intermingling with the sounds of the alarm still going off overhead. He opened his eyes just as Max made a surprised sound and hugged Ohm tightly to him. He felt his work clothes wrinkle and couldn't care less, even when he realized Max had accumulated sauce-or-something-or-another stains on himself that transferred over to him.

"Are you alright?" Max asked, not giving Ohm much time for peace as he leaned into his taller boyfriend. For a reason Ohm couldn't identify, the question made him laughed a little and pull back. He didn't know if he'd ever seen Max look so domestic, standing in front on him with food stains on an apron of all things, and an oven mitt clasped in one hand. At Max's confused look, Ohm just laughed again and pulled him down into a light, amused kiss.

"Look Max, I love you. But I think maybe we should go out for pizza or something tonight."

"... Alright."

A/N: Happy Valentine's Day! <3 You get an unscheduled shorty!

In fact, the next few may be short ones, simply because the ideas that are most interesting me are ones that don't make for very long one-shots. In other news, I'm nearing 2k and that sounds phenomenal.

Have a great day!
