Ryan hadn't been to a carnival or fair since he was a child, no older than maybe nine, and the moment was high on his list of very favorite memories. He clearly remembered many aspects of that day- winning goldfish from a vendor (fish which all died within a few days, dismantling his entire heart for a good forty-eight hours), stuffing himself on junk food (amazing salty popcorn and greasy corn dogs and pure sugar cotton candy that made his mouth water just thinking about it) and, most importantly, the rides.

So when he got an invite from Adam to spend the day at a local park with him, there was no part of him that was even slightly willing to say no. Adam was a man who had never stopped being a child, something Ryan envied a little, and he honestly couldn't picture someone to make this experience more interesting in his adult life.

He woke up early that Friday even though the fair didn't open until one in the afternoon, his brain unwilling and unable to sleep any longer than absolutely necessary. He laid there, the clock to his side reading eight twenty-seven in red letters, and couldn't stop the ridiculous excitement bubbling in his chest.

Get ahold of yourself, he commanded, voicing the side of himself that was determined to act as adult as possible at all times. That side of him rarely won, and today was just as normal- he brushed it aside and enjoyed his giddiness.

Abruptly, his phone rang on the dresser next to him, and he scrambled hurriedly to answer it without checking caller ID.

"Hello?"

"Heya!" It was Adam, of course. "'Morning, sorry for waking you up."

"How dare you, I need my beauty sleep," Ryan said with mock anger, not planning on telling him that he had already been awake. He heard a laugh on the other side, and smiled. "What's up?"

"Just wanted to let you know that I'm going to bring another person with me, if that's cool."

Ryan considered it. "Anyone I know?"

The shrug was audible. "Maybe you met him at a party or something. His name is Max."

The name was familiar, and a vague image came to mind of a tall bearded man with black hair. "I think I've met him before? Gonzalez?"

"That's the one," Adam confirmed. "He's cool, you'll like him. Probably."

"Sounds fun," Ryan agreed. He was a fairly social person, he didn't mind an addition, however unexpected. He was fairly certain he'd met this man before, probably at one of Adam's parties. The man had a wide circle of friends, Ryan couldn't say for sure he'd even met half of them.

After Adam hung up, Ryan sat his phone down in his lap and yawned, shaking off any remainder of sleepiness possible. He supposed there was no harm in getting ready early, even if early was, in this case, more than four hours early.

Ryan stood around the ticket booth with his wristband flashing a clear green on his arm, watching the crowd pile in. Already there had to be several hundred people in the fair, though he supposed that was what he should have expected on a Friday. However, Adam was about fifteen minutes late and he was beginning to feel awkward, standing there and loitering all by himself.

Just as he was about to give his friend a call, he saw the very man walk through the gates, laughing at something. By his side was a man Ryan had definitely seen before, even if he had yet to formally meet him. Max matched the image in Ryan's head exactly, though his eyes were bigger and more defining, and his cheekbones were higher, and his jawline was sharper, and-
